Use The Front Door.

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” –John 10:9-10.

I sat on the grass in my dad’s backyard and cried out to my heavenly Father. I was distraught and brokenhearted. Truth be told, I was desperate—I just had to get inside my dad’s house one last time.

I had been trying to break into the house for an hour or more by climbing through the den window. But the sill of that window was just too high, and the height of the bulkhead I was standing on was too low.

You see, my stepmother had died the year prior, and since then, my dad’s house had been closed-up. And try as I might to jump up high enough for my hips to clear the windowsill so my torso could slide inside; it just wasn’t happening. Even after stacking bricks and anything else, I could get my hands on anything remotely safe to stand on. Repeatedly, I tried, but I couldn’t clear that sill. Sobbing and frustrated, I remember crying out, “Abba, please! I’m desperate! I have to get inside! I have to walk through my dad’s house one last time. Please, Lord! Please, help me!”

I honestly couldn’t say how much time had passed. I know it wasn’t long before I heard a car door close.

Moving now from the back of the house, I started walking toward the front, and that’s when I saw them. The realtor and some couple following close behind her. I was both excited and anxious all at the same time. So, again, I began to pray. “Abba, I believe you sent this woman. That she is the answer to my prayer, please, give me favor with her. I don’t want her to think I’m some random person who doesn’t belong here.” I gave them a few minutes to get inside before I walked up the steps and knocked on the front door. She answered the door, and I explained who I was and why I was there.

“This was my dad’s house, and I’ve recently relocated from Hawaii and heard of my stepmother’s passing. I want to walk through the house one last time before it’s sold if that’s okay?”

Between her furrowed brow and what felt like a forever hesitation, finally, she said, “What can you tell me about the person who owned this house? I gave her everything I could think of shy of my dad’s shoe size and eye color, and it must have satisfied her because she said, “the buyers are upstairs at the moment, you can walk through the main floor.”

“Perfect,” I thought. Thank you, Lord! That’s all I had wanted.

It wasn’t until I left the house and got back into my car that I heard the Holy Spirit whisper, “Children don’t have to break into their Father’s house. They walk in through the front door.”  

I can’t even describe what washed over me at that moment. Joy? Freedom? Peace? All of these, all at once? I know that the tears began to fall and that God healed some deep, festering wound I wasn’t even aware existed until I heard His Words and felt His healing within—warm and comforting.

That was roughly four years ago now, but it still feels like yesterday.

And if I close my eyes, I can still see the front door of my dad’s house, see him standing there waiting as I arrived and waving as I left. And I can still hear what the Holy Spirit whispered to me as clearly today as I did then.

Beloved of God, I felt led to share this with you today because some of you may be struggling with your identity in Christ Jesus—not knowing who you are as a child of God. I know there was a time I did.

Perhaps you feel you aren’t worthy to, as God’s Word promises, “… [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].” –Hebrews 4:16.

Maybe you, too, have felt or are feeling unworthy—doubting you have the right or privilege to walk right through the front door of our Father’s house. You’re not alone, Beloved of God. Many of God’s children are still working through an identity crisis, still carrying the baggage they were set free from the very moment Jesus made His Home in their hearts. “he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” –Titus 3:5. So unworthiness, insecurity, shame, and doubt are no longer our portion.

Keep in mind that your sanctification is ongoing. Remembering this: You have been changed, whether you feel it or not. You’ve been set free from the kingdom of darkness and live now in the Kingdom of Light—the Kingdom of our God. And remember also: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.….” –Romans 8:1-2.

No. You will never be 100% free of the worldly residue that clings to even the most saintly of men until you are face to face with Jesus, still, Christ does not condemn you for this, so please, stop condemning yourself! Hold fast instead to God’s Truth.

That the very moment you genuinely believed you are who God says you are and that He is who He says He is to you—in you, everything about you, who you have been right up to that very instant, whether you’ve been walking with Him ten minutes or twenty years, changed in an instant. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” –2 Corinthians 5:17. Read that again.

How? Because your relationship with God becomes personal and intimate in that glorious instant. And, as with every relationship, as you invest in it, through reading God’s Word, prayer and time spent with the Lord, your relationship with Him deepens. It becomes full and sustaining. Love grows, and trust is built and sustained.

No longer are you an outsider feeling like you must push your way into a place you’ve not been invited to. Instead, as God’s disciple—His son or daughter, you know your heavenly Father has set a place at His table just for you. “You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones….” –Luke 22:28-30.

You are Christ’s. His child—His heir. As such, if you remain in Him, faithful to Him, are entitled, have been promised, to receive all God has set aside for you from the foundation of the world. Why? How is this possible?

Your Father has always loved you.

Jesus has always wanted you to know how precious, loved, and cared-for you are. So much so that He agreed—no, willingly came forth in the fullness of time declaring to the Father that He’d die in your place that you might have Life in the Father, now and forevermore. “While we were still helpless [powerless to provide for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly” –Romans 5:6.

As God’s child, please, receive, no, cling to the promise of the Holy Spirit for dear life. Like a drowning man to a life ring. “But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast.” –Hebrews 4:16.

Yes, cling! Press to your chest that Rhema Word of Surety and Truth Holy Spirit shared with me as I cried out to Him in desperation and great need: “Children don’t have to break into their Father’s house. They walk in through the front door.”

And if you have yet to meet this Jesus—this Loving Father I’ve spoken of today, you can. See, that’s the thing with our God. So long as there is breath in your lungs, there is always hope. Still, remember, no man is promised tomorrow. And no one, not even the vilest of sinners, will ever be rejected by God if they come to Him sincerely repentant and with a heart desperate to hear from Him. “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” –Hebrews 13:6.

Priests of God…

“But you are His chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done. He brought you out of the darkness of sin into His wonderful light –1 Peter 2:9

In our justification, God has declared us righteous in Christ through His blood. In our sanctification, God is working to make us righteous in what we do, say, think, and feel. As the Lord’s holy priesthood, we can be sure that His work to sanctify us is not in vain and that even though we might get discouraged at times, He will most certainly transform us into the holy priests He has designed us to be. –R.C. Sproul.

I hope you catch what Peter is saying to you here because it is deeply personal? Please, don’t just gloss over it. This is a love note addressed to you, written by the Holy Spirit. He has hand-picked you to receive it so that you’ll have no room to doubt who you are in Christ Jesus! You have been chosen friend, by the all-knowing, all-seeing Creator of the universe Himself! And His choosing you for Himself is neither random nor recent. Watch, I’ll prove it to you: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you a prophet to the nations” –Jeremiah 1:5. Did you catch that before part? It means that you have always been in Christ Jesus—just as He has always been One with the Father. I know, I know, who can fully understand such a mystery? Our finite minds can scarcely take it all in. Yet it’s true whether we can fully take it in, or not. Look to 1 John 5:20 for confirmation. God may not have appointed you to be a prophet to the nations, but He most certainly formed you in your mother’s womb and set you apart for His immense pleasure and use. As a child of God, election and purpose are a double portion blessing. You came into this world with their seeds planted deeply in your belly. And at the appointed time, God calls them forth. You have been chosen in Him, in part, for good works. Peter is revealing Truth here that will, should you grab hold of it, revolutionize your relationship with Jesus. Shifting you from being saved by grace alone, to being forever set afire for Christ!

Only then will you fully catch that you have been “brought out of darkness that you might proclaim—shout from the rooftop—the excellencies of Him who has called you out of that darkness, out of your sin, and into His marvelous Light.” Friend, God has chosen you to be a beacon of light in this dark world. Go forth and shine!

And by using the title royal priesthood, Peter is reminding you that as a child of God, you share in a sacred privilege that once was reserved solely for His firstborn, the nation of Israel. Those God has chosen to set aside as His special possession. “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy ” –1 Peter 2:10. Having been grafted into this treasured branch then, you receive both the blessings and the benefits that flow through it. “For you [are] a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth” –Deuteronomy 7:6. Yet, unlike the priests of old, you are no longer required to bring an animal sacrifice to God to be offered up in reparation for your sins. Because God so loved you, He sacrificed His only Son, Jesus, once for all, to atone for the sins of the entire world. Instead then, as royal priests, we offer ourselves, our lives, wills, our plans, hopes, and dreams as loving sacrifices unto our God. All the while imparting His grace to others and drawing nearer to Him ourselves. “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified” –Hebrews 10:10–14. Peter is letting you know that because of Jesus’ perfect sacrifice, you are a royal priest who needs none but Him to stand between you and your Father as mediator. “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” –Romans 8:34.

The world needs us to take our mandate seriously and be a true priest of God so that we might rightly minister the things of His kingdom to all those He’s calling unto Himself, into His kingdom. –Rabbi Kirt A. Schneider.

Peter is also letting you know that you are a holy nation. “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners” –1 Peter 1:15-17. He is reminding you that you are not of this world. You’ve been called out of it, to live separate from all that it offers, that you might share in the eternal glory of the next—serving God nevertheless, while you’re still here. You are a citizen of a holy nation, robed in Christ’s Righteousness, washed clean in His shed Blood. Called to live a life that is pleasing to God. After all, being holy means: to be set apart, unique. “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” –Isaiah 61:10.

You are not like those who belong to this world—this nation. They have no desire to be set apart for God, be used by Him. They’ve chosen instead, to serve themselves. To have at best, a form of godliness. Making their own rules, living however they so choose. But not you friend. You have been hand-picked by God. Plucked from the dark influences of this world. Your standard then must be higher, purer, aimed exclusively at pleasing God alone. Everything you do lovingly brought before the One who searches and knows the motives of each man’s heart. Trusting that He is fashioning you daily to look more and more like His Son—like where you’re headed, not where you’ve been. All that you might spread the seeds of the Gospel wherever God plants you—be it in your home, your workplace, the grocery store, or the privileged platform of your ministry. You must—each of us must, do all that we can as people set apart for His use to bring glory to His name.

How unfathomable the honor to be used by God? A vessel that allows His Truth and Love and Light to so shine through our cracked and flawed humanness, that all matter of men are drawn to what it is we possess wanting to possess it for themselves. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body” –2 Corinthians 4:7-11.

Dear friend, know that your being here is no accident. God loves you with a mind-blowing, unplumbed love—He has purposefully led you here. He wants you to know how deeply you are cherished, even if you find that hard to believe. He will show you if you’ll just invite Jesus in.

Worthy. John 14:1

 “Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.” 

Worthy. None of us are. We each deserve death for our sins against God alone. Yet, because of the Precious Lamb of God, because of the One, the only One, who is and was and will forever be worthy, we who have been chosen by Him, washed in His shed Blood, are made worthy through Him…

We are witnesses to the shift in a conversation. A shift in the way we witness love—our understanding of it, our part in it, our own worth as a result of it…

Jesus has talked to His disciples about His impending death. But, during this conversation, one of these, Peter, proclaims that so great is his love, his belief in Jesus—that he’s ready to die for him! And that’s where Jesus tells Peter—bold Peter, certain Peter, that not only won’t he die for Him anywhere soon—he’s about to betray Him by denying he ever knew Him! In fact, Jesus gets so specific, He tells Peter that he’ll deny Him not once, or twice, but three times before the morning fully comes…

And then it happens. The pivot—the shift in the conversation…

As if Jesus had not just dropped these back to back “bombs”—these, game changing, life altering declarations, He tells everyone present to be calm—not to get all worked up about what He had just said. “Do not let your heart be troubled.” Are you kidding me right now! Don’t let your hearts be troubled after Jesus, tells them that He’s about to die after only three years of friendship? Really? They were just getting to know and deeply trust Him…

And what of Him being the Messiah?

Who would free them from Roman tyranny if He died?

And Why? Why was this happening? How could Jesus say something so contrary to the state of each of their “already fearful” hearts?

“Believe in God, believe also in Me.”  Jesus is trying to shift their focus from fear and fright—to a deeper faith in Him. Towards the work He knew He was about to do, and had already done, in them. He knew also that in just a moment the Holy Spirit would come to them turning their mourning, their fear and sadness, in to joy unspeakable! He’d turn their every question mark into a period. He’d expose them to Pure Truth.

Jesus knew His friends believed in Him, but He also knew that even believers have heart trouble at times. And this was one of those times. Yet, if they would only trust in Him just a little longer…

Our friends had each missed the shift—the opportunity to change the basic assumptions they had lived out as fact. They missed the peek into Truth—into what was truly real. Into the who, what and why of Jesus, the purpose for His coming—and going. They missed entirely how their worth was really His. How when God saw them—He saw Jesus and His finished redemptive work in their lives—and ours.They had each been called to follow Him. To leave all that they had known, were, for this new life He had for them, in Him…

They missed the clue Jesus had just given them into what was about to happen—to them all…

Jesus knew long before any of these had even thought to follow Him He had chosen them as the very vessels He would use to usher in His Church—the Way. Use them to bring about, to cause, an upheaval in the fixed, rigid, legalistic, idolatrous world system. The way in which some Jews, and the rest of the world, had come to view God, His Temple, and their relationship with Him.

And, Peter was about to become the leader of this new revolution!

It’s why he was, in part, created—chosen. Made worthy. Redeemed, again and again. Yes, this same Peter whom Jesus had just stated would thrice betray Him will end up being the great apostle God will use to build His Church.  If you’ve ever betrayed Jesus, you should be shouting for joy now! Not for your betrayal, but because If God forgave Peter and saw worth in him—He’ll  do the same for you too!

It is, was, and will forever be—all about Jesus. His work. His will. His choosing and love of us, first, that makes us worthy to boldly come before Him.

Where we see failure, frailty, ambiguity, God sees our worth…

Jesus alone modeled an untroubled heart amid what certainly appeared—to those gathered, to be a time of trouble. He alone knew Gods will not only for Himself—for why He had come at all, but also for each one gathered with Him and more—for you and me and for the whole of humanity. We are their harvest, the apostles. But we are Gods seed.

Jesus saw Peter as worthy—as a son, not as a betrayer. Perhaps that’s why He didn’t belabor the point with Peter concerning his betrayal after He had spoken of it? Jesus saw Peter as a finished product—complete and sinless in Himself; high and lifted-up—already seated with Him in Heaven, victorious. Through the very work He had talked to them about and would soon accomplish on His Cross—by His resurrection, the defeat of sin, death, and the grave, it was through this reality—by this Truth, that Peter, and each of these disciples was made worthy.

As are each of us called by His name and into the family of God…

Jesus continues telling His friends that shortly, it may seem that He’s left them—He never will. But, He must go before them to prepare all that He has predestined for them all from the moment it entered Him to bring them forth, give them life and a purpose, a calling. He reminds them—instills in them, that He is the only way in which anyone can be re-united with God. He tells them plainly that in seeing Him, they have in fact—seen God. And, if they can’t yet get their heads around that fact for its own sake, believe it because of all His works—the signs, wonders, and miracles He had done.

This is the second time our friends have heard Jesus claiming this same Truth.

It was wintertime in Jerusalem, the time of Hanukkah. Jesus and these same friends were walking around the Temple near Solomon’s colonnade when a high-spirited crowd broaches Him with a very pointed question. Read John 10:22-42 to hear their whole conversation…

But to get back to the conversation Jesus is having with His friends—lets once again listen in…

Jesus affirms each of them as worthy in Him—by Him, through Him, as He tells them that these very same miracles He has done they too will do—and even greater things than these! He reiterates that He’s going back to the Father and, in that moment a mystery is exposed to them—yet another shift occurs. Jesus makes plain that because He’s going back to God they will now be able to have access to the same power of God Jesus Himself had. All they must do is ask the Father anything in His name and, so long as it’s the Fathers will, it will be done for them as it was for Jesus. Because of His choice of them—they have been made worthy of heaven—of relationship with God. Of sonship.

And, Jesus will use them each to change the world for heaven’s sake!

One cannot meet God and remain unchanged. Christ in them caused such a love for Himself to swell up on the inside, they joyfully, willingly, obeyed His commands. Just as He lovingly, willingly obeyed the Father’s. Christ in us—a true encounter with Christ, will always cause disruption to our norm.  Will always bring about both a letting go—and a letting in. Love makes us want to be—stretch to become, the very best version of ourselves. Love causes us to surrender to itself. And, it is in that surrender that our worth is found. We are worthy because He chose us as His own.

The question is—do you believe it?

Have you found your worth in the Living God—Jesus Christ? If you don’t know Him, haven’t yet met Him, invited Him, and all He offers you, into your life, do it today. While there’s still time. Why continue living feeling like your unworthy when God has so much more planned for your life? Christ died to show you just how worthy He thought you were. Don’t pass that by. Call out to the One who holds your worth, my worth, in the palm of His nail pierced hand…
