Creator and creations.

“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set] so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].” –Ephesians 2:10.

Michelangelo’s Statue of David, created between 1501 and 1504, is known for its remarkable details, particularly in the right hand. This iconic statue was carved from a single 6-ton slab of marble that two other sculptors had discarded due to flaws. The marble lay exposed to the elements for 26 years before a 26-year-old Michaelangelo was awarded the commission.

Today, we will endeavor to peer into the mind of our Creator God, skimming a finger across the surface of His plans and abilities, predestined works designed and assigned for us and to us—before God called us into being—these plans set in stone if you will, before the foundation of the world. Think of it: Our Father has afforded us the privilege of partnering with Him in good works.

The Sovereign God of the universe, our Creator, Jesus, allows us to carry such knowledge and treasure within our mere earthen vessels– mind-blowing!

Michelangelo, endowed by God with the vision and ability to coax delicate veins and whisper-thin fingernails out of unforgiving marble, God affords you and me our unique talents and giftings, some small glimmer of His distinct abilities splashed onto us—enabling us. Such awe-inspiring skills and attributes are partly shared, Creator to creation, witnessed in the fullness and potency of His Majestic imagination in creation.

Think of it: Before anything materialized in the natural world, any gift bestowed to a man—everything was first conceived in God—in the realm of the Spirit—then made manifest by Elohim, Creator God.

Omniscience and Omnipotence united in a single cause—creation. “Thus saith God the Lord (he that created the heavens and spread them abroad: he that stretched forth the earth, and the buds thereof: he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.” –Isaiah 42:5.Your skills, talents and abilities, eye color, lifespan, every breath, the planets, plants and trees, gifts from God, their genesis, a thought, originated in the mind of The Creator of all things. “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” –Revelation 4:11.

Bible: “By faith [that is, with an inherent trust and enduring confidence in the power, wisdom and goodness of God] we understand that the worlds (universe, ages) were framed and created [formed, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose] by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.” –Hebrews 11:3.

Now understand this beloved of God: This same Creator God, Sovereign in power and abilities, this Master Craftsman, Originator, Initiator, Sustainer, Author of your faith, gifts, and talents, fashioned you with great intention in Christ Jesus. Complete with a detailed plan for your life. Work for your hands to accomplish, hearts to mend and lives to minister to. So I’ll remind you, child of God, that you were created on purpose for a purpose, in Christ Jesus, and you are loved with a kind of love that is far too big and enveloping—too far-reaching and profound for us in our finite forms to embrace fully. “For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works.”

God, the Master craftsman, the Originator of all things, crafted you with an eye and attention to detail galaxies beyond Michaelangelo’s preschool ability to carve David’s likeness from a marble slab.

God, whose capabilities make Rembrandt’s exquisite brushstrokes look like mere arts and crafts projects, spoke, and whole galaxies burst forth—vibrant and pulsing.

God, whose mind conceived an artery, sight, the complexity of the human heart, brain, and oceans, created you with everything you would ever need to do, everything He had mapped out for you to do—before the world’s foundation. “Which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set] so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].”

Hear God’s Words today, not mine. Cling to them as Living proof of Jesus’ Divine intention and purpose in creating you. You are God’s Masterpiece. Cherished and adored. God says it this way: “You are one who is precious in my eyes! You are glorious and I have loved you! I have given men in exchange for you, and peoples in exchange for your life!” – Isaiah 43:4.

A man may have called you a mistake, unwanted, unplanned, but not God.

Yet, you’re not alone if you wrestle with believing this Truth. Many of our brothers and sisters who love and serve the Lord struggle with wrapping the unhealed areas of their hurting hearts around this Truth. So if you are faltering in embracing the Truth that you are God’s Masterpiece, having been sealed in Christ Jesus on purpose for a purpose before the foundation of the world—know that I am praying God heal whatever broke your heart or trust.

I’m praying, too, that you will remember to live by faith and not according to your hurt feelings.

Please, don’t allow what others have done to you, their failures, cruelty, unthinking, uncaring actions to harden your heart against ever fully receiving God’s unplumbed, healing, enlivening, restorative, Pure and peaceable Love.

You are not an accident, Beloved of the Lord! Drink in God’s Truth: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!” –Psalm 139:13-17.

Beloved of God, our limitedness, our inability to fully conceive or take a thing in, does not negate God’s Truth, His Omniscience and Omnipotence, nor His ability to place such a thing within us—within our reach, the scope of our ability to interact or partake of it. The same Creator who gifted Michelangelo and Rembrandt, who poured the Psalms into David’s belly and then pulled them out that they might edify us, chose you—crafting you precisely as you are.

Suppose you belong to—have a relationship with Him who created you. In that case, the Infallible proof of the following bold declaration is possible because, paraphrasing Scripture, God told the Apostle Paul: “Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.”

Do you think that our Sovereign, Creator God, seeing your end from your beginning, would entrust you with carrying such Treasure as His Holy Spirit, who enables you to fulfill the good works God has predestined for you and has gifted you with the ability to co-create with Him, if He could not guard such eternal treasures, keeping them and you until His return? “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].” –Philippians 1:6.

Dear friend, if you have your sight, you have seen evidence of this Creator God I’ve spoken of today. —God made sure of that. Father God wanted to ensure you do not miss Him.

Everything He created was done with you in mind, for your pleasure and benefit, because Jesus loves you. You may not know Him personally yet, so I invite you to do that now. Ask Jesus to be The Lord of your life. Tell Him you’re genuinely sorry for your sins and want a lifelong relationship with Him. He’ll do the rest. “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” –Romans 1:20

Mountain View

“Now if you will listen to Me and carefully keep My covenant, you will be My own possession out of the peoples, although all the earth is Mine, and you will be My kingdom of priests and My holy nation. These are the words that you are to say to the Israelites. “–Exodus 19:5-6.

I love visiting the White Mountains in New Hampshire. There is something so inspiring about gazing upon God’s majestic creation. Even as a child, I felt a draw to it. I still do today. That same feeling of awe continues to come over me. As I grew, I noticed the mountain scenes changed as the seasons changed. I saw that the mountain would be bright green due to its abundance of trees in summer, while in Autumn, these same trees changed color—bright yellow, orange and red as if the mountain itself was on fire. Then, when winter came, and the trees were bare, brown bark and white snowfall became the color of the day. Still, each season is as beautiful as the next.

And though the appearance of my beloved mountain changes with the seasons, my steadfast God never will. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” –Hebrews 13:8.

Our God never changes. His word is and always will be eternal: “For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you. Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed, Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” –Isaiah 54:10

Some may reject this Truth—reject God, while others, like you and me, have received the eternal gift of salvation that gave birth to our relationship with His son, Christ Jesus.

The God of the Old Testament is the same as in the New Testament. Jesus is the bridge connecting one to the other. It is His grace afforded us by His shed Blood having laid down His sinless Life, a Living sacrifice, on the Cross at Calvery.

If you have given your life to Jesus, you have been ransomed, washed clean of your sins. “The council of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.” –Psalm 33:11.

God of the Old Testament is loving, but punishment came when His people failed to listen and follow His instructions. Remember, though merciful and kind, God is also Holy and a Just Judge. God cannot dwell where sin exists. The Scriptures remind us that the wages of sin are death—eternal separation from God. And since His Word is the same yesterday, today, and forever, the same is true today.

So, if you choose not to live for God and instead live outside His will, your actions will have consequences. Maybe not in this life, but indeed in the life to come. 

Today’s Scripture verse is just one of the promises God made to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai.

God spoke to Moses in the wilderness and gave him charge over the Israelites. He instructed Moses on what His people needed to do to prepare to meet Him on Sanai. “And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.” – Exodus 19:9-10.   

Without being washed by His Word, outside of God’s covering, you and I are unclean in God’s sight—just as the Israelites were.

God told Moses His people needed to consecrate themselves.

Consecrate means to set apart, make holy, and dedicate to God. So Moses told the people to wash their clothes and clean themselves.

It had been a long journey from Egypt to the Sinai. Maybe the people were still covered in the dirt of Egypt, an unholy place. And perhaps that made these people God loved a stench in His nostrils. Remember, we serve a Holy God. There is no sin in Him. “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” –1 John 1:5.

Being Holy, God has set impassable bounds for us. “You shall set bounds for the people all around saying, “Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.” –Exodus 19:12.

God has chosen the Israelites to be His chosen people, but He still sees sin in them.

And God sees the sin in our lives. We, too, must be washed in the Water of His Word, made clean by His shed Blood. Water alone is no substitute. It will not wash away our sins. It may clean our outer garments, but our souls will still be stainted. Only Jesus can rid us of our sins. Our merits or any good deed we might do cannot accomplish it.

Psalm 25:3-4 makes this clear: “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.”

At first glance, there seems to be no way a man could ever approach such a Holy God.

The view up this mountain appears distorted. God has set boundaries. Without the washing away of our sins, we cannot have fellowship with Him. We will never be in right standing with God, yet He has set eternity before us.

God has made a way where there was no way. “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” –Ecclesiastes 3:11.

The path ascending to Sinai was blocked, but God made a way for all men to follow Him. He made the Way long before Moses was ever born. God knew that only someone holy like Him could stand in His presence. Someone who knew Him and shared His heart and Blood. Someone who would go down to the earth and bring all men to Himself. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” –John 3:16.

In Matthew 4:23-25, Jesus starts His ministry in Galilee. He is healing every kind of sickness and disease.

He is preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Great multitudes of people follow Him across Galilee, from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan. God is healing the people He loves. He is walking with them and teaching them. This unobstructed access to Himself was what was missing at Sinai. God is Holy, indeed, and His Word is Holy, yet this did not stop a Holy God from coming into a sinful world in the likeness of men. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we behold His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” –John 1:14.

Just as Moses did once, Jesus, the Son of God, walked up a mountain and sat with His disciples.

Jesus did not place barriers between Him and them. He did not tell the people they could not follow Him because they were unclean. Jesus is 100 percent man and 100 percent God. Yet He sat with whosoever would draw near to Him and blessed them in hearing the most excellent sermon ever shared—the Sermon on the Mount.

What a beautiful, unobstructed view of God’s love and compassion for all of us who proclaim Jesus as Lord. 

Which mountain view do you want? I pray it is the one that allows you to ascend the mountain with Jesus and sit at His feet.

You are not too far gone, my friend. No one is. All it takes to become a child of God is one sincere confession of faith—asking Jesus to be Lord over your life. Draw close to Him and receive His salvation by repenting of your sins. If you have done this, get ready to catch some incredible views. Amen. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” –Romans 10:9-10.

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” –Isaiah 40:31, emphasis my own.

“New.” As defined by the Oxford Dictionary: not existing before, recently made.

I am writing on the eve of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, meaning “head of the year.” And so, a changing of the guard is about to occur. Yet the old year would have given way to the new by the time you read this. Those who had been eyeing the perfect head of cabbage or garlic at market, the ideal fish or rooster or lamb for roasting—wanting to ensure the head of something extra-ordinary and satisfying was the centerpiece of a table ladened with hope, the companion of new beginnings, home now.

Their hope? That with its last breath, this year passed away peacefully; pray God, relinquishing all it held dear, having entrusted any loose ends, any unspoken goodbye, that remnant of heartbreak or suffering, into the Sovereign hands of God. And then, as with a baby’s first breath, the embryonic New Year would instinctively, joyfully announce its arrival, ushering in a new sound, as do all things the Lord ordains, if we have ears to hear. And, with its clean slate and new beginnings, Rosh Hashanah will cry out from the bottom of its hope-filled lungs, announcing its triumphal arrival. “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth—let your cry ring out, and sing praises!” –Psalm 98:4.

And this New Year, original as it is, nevertheless follows an age-old pattern. Like its predecessors, contrary to the joys or pains it might hold, it will come and go. It has been this way since man began tracking time, one year following another, landing me here on the eve of yet another New Year. “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” –Ecclesiastes 1:9.”What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” –Ecclesiastes 1:9.

Yet, in today’s verse, this “new strength” the Lord describes to His Prophet, Isaiah, this newness born of His Spirit, is unlike anything else. “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.” –Isaiah 40:28.

This newness is uncreated, having no beginning. It mirrors its Creator; its end, known only to Him. “Now God himself will have his home with them—’God-with-them’ will be their God! He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and eliminate death entirely. No one will mourn or weep any longer. The pain of wounds will no longer exist, for the old order has ceased.” And God-Enthroned spoke to me and said, “Consider this! I am making everything to be new and fresh.” –Revelation 21:3-5.

With an all-in certainty, soon and very soon, God will fulfill the above Power-filled verses.

I am also unquestionably confident that Jesus is renewing the strength of His beloved children who trust in Him. In this New Year, I choose to take God at His Word. He is imparting His strength to those who place their trust in Him; new, uncreated, supernatural power flowing straight from the heart of God into His people.

Into you, whose body has been ravaged by cancer, beloved of the Father. And into you, whose faith is in tatters, a mere thread holding it together. And you, weary soul, bent over that grave, wetting its dug-up soil with your tears, leaving so many unspoken words and unfilled hopes of tomorrow in its cold depth. To you, husband, or wife, crying out night and day over your strained marriage as you seek God for answers—and dear parents, carving paths in the carpet from pacing to and fro. Praying, beseeching, wondering where your child may be this night; like the prodigals before them, having taken all they could fit in a bag, they have run after the illusive, shiny bobbles of the world.

Still, beloved, if you will but fix your sorrow-full eyes on heaven, lifting your bowed head, you will find yourself staring into the eyes of Love unsearchable. Jesus will have stooped down beside you and, in His strength, bid you drink deep and freely of Him until you are sated and restored. “…those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” –John 4:14.

But, you will not be restored to who or what you were before.

No, beloved, remember, old things have passed away. God is doing something new in you. Rest confidently in this Truth as you mount up on new wings, soaring to new heights in this a new season: “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.” –Isaiah 40:29. Beloved, this singular, unifying nugget of Truth unearthed in Isaiah 40:29, upholds the believer from the beginning of any one year until its end.

It has been this way before time as we know it because this mysterious Truth exists in God, a sliver of His multifaceted, benevolent character.

And then, no longer weak nor weary after being lifted by God’s new strength, go, in the power of His Holy Spirit and encourage your brother, your neighbor. The soul who has yet looked into the eyes of Love unsearchable that they too may be made new this year. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, and he has anointed me to be hope for the poor, healing for the brokenhearted, and new eyes for the blind, and to preach to prisoners, ‘You are set free! ‘ I have come to share the message of Jubilee, for the time of God’s great acceptance has begun.” –Luke 4:18-19.

“Shana Tov,” beloved of God.

You dear friend, If the God I speak of, the God whose unsearchable Love for you, has called and kept you glued here, please, take a moment longer and say yes to what it is He is offering you: Love and a new beginning in Him—with Him. Start by telling Him you are sorry for everything you know you have done wrong—tell Him everything—and mean it. Then, tell Him you want Him, and His Holy Spirit will come and make His home in you. Don’t take my word for it. Read it for yourself: “…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.” –Romans 10:9-10.

Kingdom Builder.

“For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it.” –1Corinthians 3:9-10.

One thing I love about our Lord Jesus is that first, He loves me and forgives me of all my sins! Secondly, I love how He speaks to one person in His Body and will confirm that Word through another within His Body.

A “rebuilding of hearts” and “reconciliation” is happening within the Body of Christ. Jesus is so powerful and awesome! Still, He does not favor one over the other. God looks at you in the pew with the same love as He looks at your pastor. The roles you each serve are different. Your assignment may not match what other brothers and sisters have been given, but God no less loves you. 

I pray that you will know how much our Lord Jesus loves you.

And I pray you know this also: God will not stop loving you when you fall. Because His Love enables us to pick up the broken pieces of our hearts and say, “Lord help me! Fix this heart that I am laying before You.” The Apostle Paul writes: “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” –Romans 8:37-39.

If you are Christ’s, then you are a conqueror in Christ Jesus. You are a coheir to the Kingdom of God and a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As ministers of His Word, we build on good ground—a sure foundation.

Building upon God’s Word assures us that as we build, so long as our works align with His Word, His Word will support our good works. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11.

Every building needs a strong foundation. Without it, the structure will fall. Our sure foundation is built upon our faith in Christ and our time spent worshiping Christ Jesus. We will never be able to support the things of God and the works He has assigned us without first knowing and obeying Him and keeping Him first in all things. “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” –1 Corinthians 4: 12-14.

Everything man builds starts as a vision and is brought into existence.

As God spoke His vision, plan, and purpose for creation, they became manifest. God said, “Let there be,” and everything came into being. God creates. It is just one of His many Characteristics. He has also placed this ability to create—to partner with His will and plan into His children.

If you belong to Jesus, you have been given faith to speak life into that circumstance or over a family member. You can speak life into something you thought was dead, such as a dream or goal, mending relationships, and new beginnings. Whatever it is you declare, it will be done if it is according to the will of God within Christ Jesus. He is God. You are not. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. If you love me, keep my commands.” –John 14:13-15.

The Holy Spirit that lives in you, child of God, will tell you how to pray when you are unsure what to speak. Romans 8:26 tells us this: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses, For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

When we lay the groundwork of worship and praise in Jesus Christ alone, we will see the vision of what God has for us come into focus.

Jesus is the Cornerstone the builders rejected. “Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” –Mark 12:10-11.

Yet, without a cornerstone, a structure will collapse. So, too, what we attempt to build without God.

The importance of a cornerstone is that it bears much of the weight of the building’s outer structure, and it connects and unites two of the walls. As a builder for God’s Kingdom, you need Jesus to be the Cornerstone of everything you build concerning life and ministry.

In other words, “Do not try to do what God must do first.” Put Jesus in the front of it. His name carries Authority. His Blood washes away our sins, and He sets the captive free!

Jesus teaches us about rock and sand, two very different types of foundations: It would be foolish on our part to dismiss God’s instructions for our lives.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock; and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that that house; and it did not fail, for it was founded on the rock.” –Matthew 7:24-25.

As we read and declare the words of Jesus, we must also apply them to our daily lives. Jesus says in the Scripture, “Whoever hears these sayings of Mine, AND DOES THEM, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Proverbs 1:7 reminds us: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Now, fear of the Lord is not fear, as we understand it, being terrified or scared of something or someone; instead, fear of the Lord is a reverence for a deep and abiding love, respect, and awe of God.

“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand; and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell, And great was its fall.”

Jesus gave us the blueprint on how to walk out our faith, but if we choose not to adhere to the Word of God, the collapse, the storms of doubt and fear will rain on us and crush us just as they did the house built on sand. We who believe can and must rely on Truth: The Word of God is consistent and always will be. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” –Revelation 1:8.

As I close, dear friends, I pray the Holy Spirit speaks to anyone needing a firm foundation to stand on. Assuring you that to receive salvation, you need only confess and wholeheartedly repent your sins to the Lord Jesus, asking that He come into your heart.” for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.” –Romans 10:9-10.

Rebuild You Say?

“…Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?” –Nehemiah 4:2

Rebuild? Move forward? How, Lord? My strength is gone. My thoughts are fractured and muddy. My heart is little more than rubble—pieces charred by this searing inferno of grief.

My mother is gone!

But You know that—You took her Home!

Yes, I know, in Your mercy, You answered my prayers—our prayers, that she might not suffer any longer, and I thank You for answering us, but if You will, answer me this as well:

What am I supposed to rebuild from this giant heap of pain? “Partner with Me,” You say. Give You my heart? Yes, that’s right! Rebuilding, reshaping, New Life, only You can do that. Only You breathe life into what’s dead—reviving it.

Only You know my end from my beginning.

But what can You build with charred rubble? “And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.” –Jeremiah 18:4.

These thoughts raced through my head as I read Nehemiah, Chapters Three and Four. I knew the Holy Spirit was telling me it was time to rebuild. After all, He was the One who had just spoken to my heart, nudging me to read His Words.

He said He would use all the broken pieces of the last season, things that appear defunct, to build a new foundation—start a new chapter, just as He did for those who have gone before me. Our Father is faithful like that. He doesn’t play favorites.

So what do you do when someone most dear to your heart is taken away?

When you feel feeble, raw, and exposed—at your most vulnerable?

When God takes back the very one He used to bring you into His world? To deliver you into the life He had mapped out for you from before the foundation of the world? When everything inside of you is silently screaming in pain so thick and exacting that breathing becomes a chore—as does everything else.

Like Job, you mourn, howl, question, sob, and then wait for God to rebuild: one trusting step at a time. “The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” –Job 1:21.

You do the next thing.

In your own power? Not a chance. You have nothing left.

You rebuild by grabbing hold of God’s outstretched Hand so tightly that fusion happens, complete Oneness—absolute surrender. Then, from the bond forged between you, welded together by love and trust, you allow His Holy Spirit to lead, as is your privilege. You let Him place one of your feet in front of the other—in His good time, inching you closer and closer to your life’s purpose—reflecting the image and likeness of His Son, our Lord, Jesus. “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” –2 Corinthians 3:18.

You allow God to use the rubble of your broken heart. Seared and scared by grief so deeply rooted in your bones, it feels as if any attempt at removing it might cause your foundation to collapse. And collapse it must—because God is doing a new thing. “That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.” –Romans 8:28.

Hear me, please. I do not profess to understand how God accomplishes all of this—that’s far beyond my ability to comprehend. Neither can I say that it feels good as He’s working things together for my good, but what I can say with absolute confidence is this: I serve a Good, Good Father whom I do not need to understand in full to know that He loves me—loves all those called by His Holy name. “So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.” –1 Corinthians 9:26.

I trust Jesus.

I choose to place the total weight of my faith, every sliver of my now-broken heart, into His Omniscient, Omnipotent, nail-pierced Hands.

My faith in my Father, more, His overwhelming love for me demands that of me.“Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God, this deep, deep wisdom? It’s way over our heads. We’ll never figure it out. Is there anyone around who can explain God? Anyone smart enough to tell him what to do? Anyone who has done him such a huge favor that God has to ask his advice? Everything comes from him; Everything happens through him; Everything ends up in him. Always glory! Always praise! Yes!” –Romans 11:33-36.

When will this fog lift? I cannot say. Only God knows.

When will I see this new thing, the new version of myself Jesus is bringing forth, the beauty springing up from the ashy cinders of my heart? I don’t know. Soon. Whatever that means.

In the meantime, I will do the next thing while God rebuilds using whatever remains.

I will worship, pray, and praise God’s precious Name; I’ll serve Him because these are the fruits of a new creation. Byproducts birthed in me by His Holy Spirit. Because He lived, died and rose again on the third day my old man has passed away; my new man knows only Jesus, His amazing grace and mercy-full love. “For I made the decision to know nothing [that is, to forego philosophical or theological discussions regarding inconsequential things and opinions while] among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified [and the meaning of His redemptive, substitutionary death and His resurrection].” –1 Corinthians 2:2.

Still, I’ll ask your forgiveness for any scrape or bruise I may cause as God’s Holy Spirit continues His work in me, repairing the charred rubble in this season of new beginnings, and I’ll turn to Jesus, in faith knowing, “As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength. You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me. The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.” –Psalm 138:3;7-8.

Beloved of God, I know sharing the news of my mom’s passing with you is personal. But you’re family. You are my brothers and sisters in Christ. And so I trust because of this, you will pray for me and my family as we walk through this valley of the shadow of death—and we will. I, for one, have staked my life on this Truth.

And please say yes, you whom God is wooing, calling to Himself—to become His child—my new brother or sister. I need you; we, the Body of Christ, need you. We need what only you have to offer us all. “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” –1 Corinthians 12:12;18-20.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.” –Romans 10:9-10.

A Living Fountain

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” –John 7:37-38.

One of my many joys is camping with my family, which goes back to when I was growing up in New Hampshire, and my dad would take us camping in the White Mountains. Sometimes, the days were bright and sunny without a cloud in the sky. But then there were days when dark clouds would form in the distance and roll in on us. This meant it was about to rain, and we needed to take cover in our tents and wait for the storm to pass. 

Waiting was never my strong suit when I was a kid, and I may struggle occasionally still as an adult. So, I would leave the tent with my sister and go out and play in the rain, jumping in puddles and getting all muddy, and my mom would tell my dad to get us back in the tent. But he would just let us run around and get wet and muddy. It was all about the experience and the memories we were making.

Why am I sharing this time with you? Because now I’m the dad. And I just took my family on a camping trip. And while I was there, the Lord shared a revelation.

I usually like to camp in a tent, but we decided to rent a little cabin on a hill this time. While camping, a huge rainstorm came over us, complete with winds. It stormed until the next day. When morning came, I walked out of the cabin and looked around. As we were on a hill, I could see some cranberry bogs about a mile away from the cabin. They were filled with the rain from the night before. 

Cranberry bogs are made to grow cranberries; some bogs are designed to collect and hold water. When the time comes to harvest the cranberries, the farmer will open the channels and let loose the water from one bog to flood the other, making it easier to gather the cranberries.

As I looked out over the bog, the revelation came to me: “Imagine if there was no rain.” Imagine if water never touched the surrounding land. What if the ground was dry and barren, and nothing would grow? That is when I heard God speak this clearly in my Spirit, “What if My Spirit was never poured out on you?”

Can you think of a time when you did not have the Holy Spirit with you?

Throughout the Bible, we read of droughts and famines. In 2 Kings 17:1, we read where the prophet Elijah says: “….As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew or rain these years, except at my word.” Scripture tells us King Ahab was married to Jezebel, A very evil priestess of the Baals. The land was in sin, and the prophet Elijah declared God’s hand; His presence over this land would be removed. God was not worshiped and loved there. The land was dry and barren as a result of God’s judgement upon it; the wages of sin is death. 

We can see in this what Jesus meant, beloved, “What if My Spirit was never poured out on you?”

This is the revelation the Holy Spirit shared concerning those who run to Jesus.

No longer are they dry and barren, but like that bog, they are full to overflowing with God’s Holy Spirit. Those who repent of their sins and declare that Jesus is Lord will no longer walk in the ways of the Baals but run to the only One that will give them eternal life. The only One who can bring them into right standing with the Father, the only One who died and rose again for the sins of all humanity. Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords!

At one point in our lives, we were all dry. We were living a life full of sin and fleshly desires. We were empty, cracked vessels, unable to hold or let anything Godly grow inside us. The water we drank could only quench our fleshly thirst. We were just like the woman at the well.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst, But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” –John 4:13-14:

Water helps things grow. When we sow a seed in the ground, we do not just plant it and leave. Seeds need to be watered as well.

And how do we water a spiritual seed? Through praise and worship, my dear friends. The Holy Spirit comes in power and will help you grow your relationship with God the Father. Knowing God’s Son, Jesus, is the only way for the Holy Spirit to live in you. “All things have been delivered to Me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” –Matthew 11:27

My dear brothers and sisters, If you have a relationship with Jesus, have repented of your sins and confessed Him as your Lord and Savior, then His Holy Spirit is living inside you.

Jesus is the Living Water who springs forth within you.

He is not still and stagnant. He is a Living, rushing, mighty river of Water bursting forth within you.

Think back to when the farmer opened the water channel to fill that bog I spoke of earlier. That water rushed throughout the bog, saturating it so the ripened fruit could be harvested. So, too, the Holy Spirit rushes in and helps harvest the fruit you will bear.

What fruit?   The fruit of the Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” –Galatians 5:22-23. A follower of Christ will display at least one, hopefully a few, of these fruits.

Do not worry if you still need to get all of them. Sometimes, it takes longer for some to grow than others. And if you feel you are not bearing fruit in your life, ask the Holy Spirit to help you. But remember as you do this that you are the branch, Jesus is the vine, and God the Father is the Vinedresser. So you may be pruned to see that fruit come forth. Pruning is a necessary process. It rids us of dead things that are stopping our growth. Pruning is painful, but its harvest will be beautiful. 

As we end here, know that if Christ is in you, you are an overcomer. “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” –1 John 4:4.

If you are a child of God, Christ in you is a river of everlasting Life. The Potter Himself has changed you. The Fountain of Living Water has filled you with Himself.

And if He has not filled you, will you allow Jesus to bring you to a place of overflowing joy today, knowing that if you do, your name will be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life? Jesus says in Matthew 7:28, “Come to Me, all you who labor and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Declare today, “I choose You, Lord Jesus, and come fill me with You, Living Water!” Amen.

Fruit On The Tree

In Matthew 23:19-20, Jesus gives His disciples marching orders and with them comes a great responsibility for each disciple to follow: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. In the NKJV, Matthew’s “amen” is added after our Lord’s command. It was Apostle’s agreement with Jesus’s command. Like Matthew, we need to come into agreement with this same mindset.

Because in this season, many have been calling out to the Lord, asking, “What is my purpose in You?

What must I do to be seen by You?” Know this, my dear friends, that the work of the Cross is finished, and you do not need to operate in a “works” mentality. Your salvation is the most important thing in the eyes of Jesus, your confession of faith and the repentance of your sins. Believe me, God sees you! “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” –Ephesians 2:8-9.

“Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, Repent, and believe in the gospel” –Mark 1:14-15. Often, we can get hung up on, “What is my calling, my purpose?” In John 6, Jesus answers this question when the people of Capernaum asked, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”– John 6:28-29.

If you are a child of God, you have a heart for our Lord Jesus. Each of us has a purpose, and God knows the hearts of His children. Jesus knows who His children are and are not. He knew who He was going to call. Each of His disciples played a major role in God’s plan, even Judas Iscariot.

 Judas walked with Jesus, performing miracles and healings in Jesus’ name. But Judas was never His, meaning Judas’ relationship was not that of a true believer. His interest wasn’t in spreading the gospel. It was for his own gain. It wasn’t a love for God that motivated Judas. Still, God used Judas for His glory. Judas had the wrong mindset, and his heart was not in line with the heart of God.

Jesus desires to have a relationship with His creations and bring glory to God. Judas chose his own gain. “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him” –John 6:63-64. 

When we are willing to do the work of the ministry, we always need to have our hearts in the right place.

We must ask and pray, “Is this your will, Lord, or my own.” Too often, we can fall into the trap of “self-elevation.” We promote ourselves, get puffed up, and throw ourselves into situations and places we should never be. God may have given you the gift, but if the anointing to operate in it is not there, and the timing isn’t right, moving in your own strength will crush you. Our desire to serve God needs to be out of love for Him, for His glory and not for us to be seen by man. God will elevate you at the proper time, in His time. He does this because He loves us, dear friends, and He does not want to see any harm come to us. “He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly” – Luke 1:51-52.

“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously?’ But He gives more grace, Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble” –James 4:4-6. Judas wanted to be seen as someone important. He served God for what he could get out of it. This mindset brought him before the chief priests, where he asked the question, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Jesus to you?’ And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver” –Matthew 26:15.

In Judas’ mind and heart, the things of this world were so much more important than service to the Kingdom of God; still, God was in control. Judas was giving up an inheritance much more valuable than anything silver could buy.

Judas knew Jesus by name only, but not in his heart.

That is what salvation is, dear brothers and sisters. It is a change of heart. It’s God plucking us from this kingdom of darkness and, in an instant, placing us in the Kingdom of Light, transforming our hearts and minds through the work of His Holy Spirit alive in us now. This change happens from within and moves outwardly, producing good fruit. Accepting Jesus as Lord of all is the very first and most important work we will ever do; believing in the One who was sent. This never happened in Judas. For him, it was all show. “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me” –Matthew 15:7-8. 

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” In the end, Judas betrayed Jesus, but still, God is glorified. God uses this betrayal to show His love for each of us. Jesus goes to the Cross and dies the death that we all deserve. We were sinners who are washed clean by the Blood of Jesus. By the work of the Cross of Christ Jesus, we are reconciled to the heavenly Father if we accept Him as Lord of our lives.

Along with our brothers, we too can say, as one people of the Kingdom of God, Hear O Israel: The Lord our God is one! Unlike Judas, who, suffering from guilt, runs back to the chief priests with the money given to him, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”—Matthew 27:4.

There was no remorse for the death of Jesus in the chief priests or Judas. The flesh will never understand the things of the Spirit. Man will never be made whole by the things of this world. In the end, they bring only death. Judas hangs himself and dies, full of regret and sin. Galatians 3:13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree).”

Romans 5:8-9 “But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” Rejoice, my dear friends, that Christ died for you, and salvation is the fruit of His death!

By accepting Jesus, you are no longer slaves to your sin. I want to invite you to know Jesus and the finished work of the Cross. He went willingly to it for you and poured Himself out till there was nothing left of Himself. He selflessly gave it all for you so you would never have to hang from a tree of sin, sorrow, and shame. Ask Him to come into your heart today. Amen

Are You A Crowd Pleaser?

“So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over [to his soldiers] to be crucified” –Mark 15:15.

You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it. –Paul Coelho.

As I listened to another vessel sharing what God had laid on his heart, Holy Spirit grabbed hold the wheel when I read Mark 15:15. What you’ll read today is the result of where He led me. Thank you, Pastor Mike Padgett, for being the vessel Holy Spirit used to get my attention. I trust He’ll use the Word He’s pulled out of our bellies to accomplish His good purpose.

Now at Shechem, Joshua had assembled all the tribes of Israel, then, standing before them, he ran through the litany of how the Lord had delivered them. How God had blessed, provided for, and protected them. Then, Joshua presented the people with the inescapable choice God set before them. “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.” –Joshua 24:14-15.

Those gathered before  Joshua had a choice to make. So do we.

We must choose between serving Jesus unashamedly, being so firmly planted in Christ that the fiercest winds of change may plummet us, but they’ll never uproot our faith in Him. Joshua made his choice. Pontus Pilot certainly made his. So did the high priests and their hastily assembled crowd who shouted, “Crucify Him!”

Give us Barabbas and put an end to this supposed king of the Jews!

A day is coming when no man will be allowed to play the “I didn’t know” card.

Scripture is clear: “When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. –Philippians 2:7-11.

Why wait until it’s too late, friend? Repent your sins and confess Jesus as Lord of your life today!

Now I understand how difficult that is to hear—and for some even to believe. But I love God and you too much not to obey Him and tell you the Truth—regardless.

For much of my adult life, I, too, wrestled with God—I knew of Him, that He was God. Still, I continued living life as usual despite that fact. I was a crowd pleaser—just like Pilot. But today, with a grateful heart surrendered to Jesus, I thank God, He pursued me until He won! God always wins, and I also thank Him for that. God’s plans for my life are so much bigger and better than mine could ever be.

But back to Pilot.

We’re focusing on him today because his choice, or lack thereof, is the mirror through which we might glimpse our own choice: choose Jesus or please the crowd. “So when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather that a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands [to ceremonially cleanse himself of guilt] in the presence of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this [righteous] Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.” –Matthew 27:24.

God’s Word is clear: we can’t have it both ways. Our not choosing Jesus is, in fact, our choice. Just as it was for Pilot, no amount of hand washing will ever change this fact. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].” –Matthew 6:24-26.

If left unguarded, friends, your ears will be accosted by the shouts of those clanging voices who would have you bow down to the gods of this world—as they did Pilot. He knew what these religious leaders and their motley mob were up to.

Scream loud enough to threaten a man’s livelihood, his position, pockets, or peace, and you might cause him to fall.

In Pilot’s case, this strategy worked. Pilot’s wife, even Jesus Himself, had told Pilot who it was that stood before him. His conscience bore witness to this man being different—and innocent.

So why did he cave? What made Pilot give in to the voices that bayed for Jesus’ Blood—denying His deity?

Likely for the same reason, many today cave and deny Jesus.

Most people don’t want to stand out—create a fuss, be ostracized, risk losing friends, family members or popularity—maybe even their jobs or business. They don’t want to be labeled a Jesus freak—one of those sold-out Bible believers. They’re afraid of going against the prevailing opinions of the world in which they live. Against a legion of voices telling them their children’s sex is not fixed, as God created it, but fluid.

A girl today, a boy tomorrow, and; if they don’t support these twisted lies, they are hateful, unsupportive, bigoted parents damaging their child’s self-esteem. These same voices will assail the ear of anyone who will listen. Falsely instructing them that a woman has the right to murder the unborn child in her womb—after all, it’s her body, they say, and that so-called child is nothing more than a blob of tissue. Don’t allow that to ruin the rest of your life.

Hear me, friend. These are lies from the pit of hell, bent on twisting and destroying what God Himself created. “So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.” –Genesis 1:27.

Some of these same twisted voices shouted for Lot to send out the Angels God had sent to carry out His judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah so they might have sex with them. There truly is nothing new under the sun. Satan has always tried to pervert God’s Word, causing man to question His Truth and laws. It started in the most perfect place on earth, Eden, and continues still. “Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And he serpent (Satan) said to the woman, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden, except the fruit from the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God said, ‘You shall not eat from it nor touch it, otherwise you will die.'” But the serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die!” –Genesis 3:1-4.

Governor Pilot fell sway of the legion of voices demanding He betray Jesus—go against what He knew to be little more than petty jealousy and manipulation—a power play, politics—not much different than today, is it?

So here’s my question to you, friend. “If Jesus were to stand before you as he did Pilot, whom would you choose? Jesus, or those who deny Him.”

I pray you choose Jesus. He loves you. God hates sin, all sin. Not just sin committed by the gay community or the woman who had the abortion. God hates adultery, lying, stealing, greed. He wants us all to love and choose Him, despite our sins. God can more than cleanse us of our sins if we choose Him.“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.” –Joshua 24:15-18.

Move, Now!

“The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”–Acts 8:29-30.

In “The Knowledge of The Holy,” A.W. Tozer said this concerning the Christian: “What comes to our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” So, let me ask you, beloved believer—when you think about God, does your being obedient to Him, His Word, Commandments, to the leading of God’s Holy Spirit—spring to the forefront of your mind?

Regarding obedience to God, would you agree that we, the modern-day Church, have lost our sense of urgency in obeying God? Some measure of reverent awe that accompanies the knowledge that a holy, righteous, perfect God deigns to speak to us at all?

Has the “yes, Lord” posture of our hearts been exchanged for, “Well, maybe, God didn’t really mean right now,” when we know He did?

Has our readiness to do whatever, whenever God says, “Move, now,” been usurped by the little g god of self? Have we forgotten the importance of obedience? And the possible danger to ourselves and others when we aren’t obedient?

Not in Philip’s case, certainly not in Father Abraham’s, nor with any of the twelve Apostles. In each instance, God called, and they obeyed.

Today, we’ll examine examples of their obedience—and its fruit.

We’ll look back for a moment, that we might use what we find there to propel us forward. My hope? What you’ll read will prompt you to ask this all-important question regarding obedience to God of yourself.

Let’s start with Father Abraham…

God called Abram, a pagan, to follow Him on an extraordinary, lifelong faith journey away from kin and everything familiar. “Joshua said to the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods. But I took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac.” –Joshua 24:2-3.

Father Abraham’s faith walk was so sincere and steadfast, so steeped in holy reverence to God, that today, many are still experiencing the overflow of his unswerving obedience. “And if you belong to Christ [if you are in Him], then you are Abraham’s descendants, and [spiritual] heirs according to [God’s] promise.” –Galatians 3:29.

Thank you, Father Abraham, for leaving us a legacy of faithful, Godly obedience we might follow. A lasting, multigenerational model. “What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” –Romans 4:1-3.

And in Jesus’ Apostles, we see this exact “leave-it-all-behind” obedience.

Peter and Andrew left what they knew and loved to follow Jesus. “Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers. They were Simon (his other name was Peter) and Andrew, his brother. They were putting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Follow Me. I will make you fish for men!” At once they left their nets and followed Him.” –Matthew 4:18-20. So did James and John. “…They were sitting in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them. At once they left the boat and their father and followed Jesus.” –Matthew 4:21-22.

Likewise, with Philip and Nathanael. You can read of their obedience in John 1:43-51. And of Matthew, the tax collector turned Apostle’s obedience. “As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” –Matthew 9:9.

The Bible doesn’t give us much information on where the Lord found Thomas, Simon, and Jude, aka—Thaddues, James, son-of-Alphaeus, or the rest of His Apostles. According to Scripture, all we know for sure is they were obedient to the call of Jesus on their lives until they were martyred or, as with John, died. All of them, that is, except Judas, the son of perdition. He betrayed the Lord and then hung himself. “And our brothers defeated him by the blood of the Lamb’s death and by the truth they preached. They did not love their lives so much that they were afraid of death.” –Revelation 12:11.

And then there’s Philip. We find him in Samaria, where he’d been about the Lord’s work preaching the Gospel, healing the sick and casting out demons. “Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the people there about the Messiah. Crowds listened intently to Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the miraculous signs he did. Many evil spirits were cast out, screaming as they left their victims. And many who had been paralyzed or lame were healed.” –Acts 8:5-8.

Acts Eight tells us that an angel of the Lord told Philip to leave Samaria and head down a desert road. He obeyed immediately and met “the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under the Kandake, the queen of Ethiopia.” –Acts 8:27. The eunuch’s chariot had broken down. So, there he sat, reading aloud from a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.

Again, the Holy Spirit told Philip what to do, and Philip obeyed. “The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.” –Acts 8: 29-31

I wonder what the eunuch may have missed out on had Philip not obeyed.

Verse thirty-five makes it clear he may have missed out on knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior. Maybe the eunuch would have missed out on being baptized as well. And, looking beyond this Divine dessert assignment, who might the eunuch have told of his extraordinary encounter with Philip and God? What seeds may never have been planted had Philip not obeyed the Holy Spirit and ran to the eunuch’s side—sharing the Good News of Jesus with Him?

Will you be obedient, beloved believer, knowing that God desires your obedience over anything you could ever offer Him? Sacrifice for Him?

In closing, beloved, let me ask you again—when you think about God, does your obedience to Him, His Word, Commandments, and the leading of God’s Holy Spirit spring to the forefront of your mind? Or has your obedience been exchanged for a little g god who desires comfort over character?

That same god who whispers, “Well, maybe, God didn’t really mean right now.” Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” –John 14:23.

And you, new friend. Perhaps you’re saying, what about me? I want to be obedient, but I don’t Jesus or this Holy Spirit you mentioned earlier.

To you, I say this: Let today be the first in a life-long series of steps of obedience by saying yes to Jesus, asking Him into your life as Lord, repenting of your sins and acknowledging that you need Jesus. If you obey that tugging on your heart, Jesus promises you will be born again today!

As for what happens after that, remain obedient, get connected to a solid Bible-believing Church, read your Bible daily, and do your absolute best to love God and His people. Jesus will do the rest. Only He can! “I know, God, that mere mortals can’t run their own lives, That men and women don’t have what it takes to take charge of life.” –Jeremiah 10:23.

Repent, The Kingdom Of God Is At Hand!

“Seek the Lord [search diligently for Him and regard Him as the foremost necessity of your life], All you humble of the land Who have practiced His ordinances and have kept His commandments; Seek righteousness, seek humility [regard them as vital]. Perhaps you will be hidden [and pardoned and rescued] In the day of the Lord’s anger.” –Zephaniah 2:3 AMP.

When my eyes hit verse 3 of Zephaniah, Chapter 2 this morning, I knew what I was being led to share this week. It’s definitely not a feel-good, popular message. It never has been. But it is needed. So thank God I care little about popularity…

Smack dab in the middle of foretelling of God’s impending judgement—Zephaniah reminds Israel that Love and mercy have always been the Father’s heart towards them—towards all His children. One of the most quoted and recognized Bible verses makes this Truth abundantly clear. “For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life.” –John 3:16 AMP.

As I read Zephaniah’s third verse, almost instantly, my mind went to the Words Jesus spoke in the beginning of His earthly ministry. “From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance; seek God’s purpose for your life], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” –Matthew 4:17 AMP. And these nearly verbatim Words echo back to John the Baptist, Jesus’s forerunner. Jesus and repentance are synonymous, after all. We can trace this foundational Truth all the back to Eden.

So if God has been tugging on your heart, beloved friend, it is likely for salvation. God is offering you a relationship with Himself. “Today [while there is still opportunity] if you hear His voice, Do not harden your heart, as when they provoked Me [in the rebellion in the desert at Meribah].” –Hebrews 3:15 AMP. If you will humble yourself, repent of your sins, and tell God you’re genuinely sorry for even the vilest sins you may have committed. Then by His Word, God is faithful to forgive, cleanse, and restore you to Himself. “If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises] and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].” –1 John 1:9.

And to you, dear brother, beloved sister. Since you have tasted salvation freely given you, the goodness of God, I admonish you never to lose sight of your desire for your first Love. “But I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your first love [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me].” –Revelation 2:4 AMP. As I hope you would me, I encourage you to do whatever you must to ensure God remains first in every aspect of your life, and, if your love has grown cold, your flame of love flickering, stoke that fire right now!

Humble yourself before your Lord, repent, and run back to the feet of your Lord. Take to heart what God’s Word has to say about your salvation: “So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ].” –Philippians 2:12 AMP.

The Holy Spirit had led Jesus into the wilderness to be tested. There, Jesus had fasted and prayed for forty days and forty nights. During that time, Satan came to Him on multiple occasions to do what He does best—kill, steal, destroy—and lie. But God always has a plan! Because through this same Jesus, the Father made possible the only Way for you and me to be restored to right relationship with Him. “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.” –Acts 4:12.

This Truth, God’s intent to provide the Way back to Himself, has lived in the heart of our Father from the beginning—as we understand it.

How can I confidently state this without sounding as though I, His creation, would dare presume to know the mind of God, my Creator? Because of His Word, I trust the infallibility of God’s Word. In addition, I know my Father’s heart—experientially. I hear it beating loud and clear across every page of the Bible—God’s infallible, life-changing, Living heartbeat. “He humbled you and allowed you to be hungry and fed you with manna, [a substance] which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, so that He might make you understand [by personal experience] that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.” –Deuteronomy 8:3 AMP.

God’s fierce and resounding “I love you” is the very Lifeblood and Bread of the Bible’s every syllable.

And so, it is towards Jesus’ finished work, towards salvation—that Zephaniah is pointing us. Light and Hope amid great darkness and sin.

It’s toward the Cross, the foreshadowing of Jesus’ finished work, the shedding of His Blood, that sinless, blameless sacrifice first witnessed in Eden. Where God put to death innocent animals to cover Adam and Eve’s sinful, fallen nakedness—sin separates us from God—yet another point Zephaniah makes clear for those with ears to hear. “…Seek righteousness, seek humility [regard them as vital]. Perhaps you will be hidden [and pardoned and rescued] In the day of the Lord’s anger.” –Zephaniah 2:3.

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul said it this way concerning those who have come to know the Lord: “How will we escape [the penalty] if we ignore such a great salvation [the gospel, the new covenant]? For it was spoken at first by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us and proved authentic by those who personally heard [Him speak].” –Hebrews 2:3.

In Christ Jesus, eternal Life and hope are offered in place of death and judgment.

Again, it is towards this Truth that Zephaniah points us. Most in Israel had abandoned God—His commandments and ways. Great apostasy had saturated the people’s hearts (the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief—Oxford Dictionary) indeed, in part, that had much to do with their time in Babylon in exile. Zephaniah reminds Israel—and through them you and me, to humble ourselves before God, remembering to live by His Word—His commands, to seek His heart and to enthrone Him on ours—it is His rightful place, after all. And do not delay!

Zephaniah calls us to repent our sins before God’s righteous judgement begins and the window of God’s grace closes. Remember, Beloved, God will not tarry with man forever. “But understand this: If the head of the house had known what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.” –Matthew 24:43 AMP.

In these last days, I pray you’ll chase after Jesus with all that is in you, friends. “The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness]; The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval], And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life].’ –Numbers 6:24-26
