"Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19

As I Have Loved You.

“John answered them, “I am an urgent, thunderous voice crying out in the desert—clear the way and prepare your hearts for the coming of the Lord Yahweh!” –John 1:23.

Approximately 400 miles south of Canada, in the frigid, icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, another John, John Harper, lesser known than John the Baptist for sure, was, nevertheless, much like his namesake in his passionate love for Christ and His people. John Harper possessed the Baptist’s same kind of inextinguishable white-hot desire to point “whosoever” to the Lord Jesus. Harper’s all-consuming desire was for Christ and to reach lost souls. To this end, he gave his whole life, much like the One he adored unto death. John Harper gave up his life—and life jacket—so that George Henry Cavell could live. Fulfilling in spirit and deed Jesus’ command to all those called by His name concerning our Christian duty. “This is My commandment, that you love and unselfishly seek the best for one another, just as I have loved you. No one has greater love [nor stronger commitment] than to lay down his own life for his friends.” –John 15:12-13.

A fitting reminder at Advent. Needed to help realign our hearts to what is profoundly important.

Our sold-out determination to fervidly follow after the Savior we claim to be our Lord—wherever He may lead us.

Decidedly making straight, by the strength and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit, every crooked path onto which we’ve strayed.

Keeping alive, with burning brilliance, Jesus’ Words to us as our guides: “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” –John 15:4-5.

The only way any of us, you, and I or either John referenced in today’s teaching do these good works prepared for us before the foundation of the world, is in God’s strength. By imitating Jesus. His desire, that not one should perish. “For we are His workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” –Ephesians 2:10.

John Harper most certainly did.

Believing he was about to die; this widower first ensured his only daughter and sister made it safely onto a lifeboat. They both lived to tell of John’s bravery and self-sacrifice. How they watched as he ran back and forth along the length of the deck of that sinking ship proclaiming Jesus as Lord, beseeching those about to meet their watery deaths to receive Him as Lord and Savior.

Eyewitness and other documented reports indicate John Harper remained laser-focused and determined to do all he could to ensure no one was lost. He was seen floating in those icy North Atlantic waters where he came across the man George Henry Cavell, pictured in today’s image, adrift and clinging for dear life to some broken-off piece of the Titanic.

Cavell himself reported that John Harper asked him, not once but twice, if he was saved.

Cavell responded he was not. At which time, Harper pulled off his own lifejacket and, tossing it to Cavell, told him: “Put this on. You need it more than I do.”  Knowing for sure he would soon meet his Lord and Savior, John Harper laid down his life for Cavell—following His Savior’s example to the very end. It was Harper’s dying hope that this one man would not perish but, much like the thief on the cross, in the last moments on earth, receive the blessed assurance of eternal life. Having survived his life-changing ordeal, picked up in a lifeboat by the crew of the RMS Carpathia, Cavell later reported John Harper had yelled out to him not once but twice: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved!” And he did. And he was to the glory of God.

Salvation is personal friends, a decision each man must make for himself. Accept the lifejacket being thrown your way today, or don’t. Jesus has afforded you the extraordinary privilege of making such an eternal decision.

Jesus has done His part to ensure you’re free to choose Him—or not.

Born the Babe we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus died fully God and fully man on Calvary’s Cross. He rose again on the third day, King of kings and Lord of lords. Jesus alone has defeated death and the grave—you can, too, if you accept His offer of salvation. “I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live.” –Deuteronomy 30:19.

Friends, we must not be distracted by all that glitters this holy season, lest we forget about its true meaning and purpose: Lest we forget God’s Son, beautiful, innocent Jesus, born of a virgin—having agreed in eternity past to be born in eternity future, all that He might live and die fully  God and fully man, experiencing ALL that we have yet sinned not. The Sinless One who laid down His life for the sin full. The Guiltless for the guilty; you and me.

It’s easy to lose sight of that Truth as we sing, Joy to the World!

Forgetting entirely the cost of such joy.

John Harper never lost sight of his Savior or the great privilege of joining Him in laying down his life for a friend. Multiple times, across the Gospels, Jesus tells His disciples—tells us, told John Harper, to follow Him. Our following Jesus has always been God’s plan. And we, like John the Baptist and John Harper, and that great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us, can do this only through the power of God’s Holy Spirit at work in us, willing and enabling us, as Philippians remind us, to do His pleasing and perfect will. “For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure.” –Philippians 2:13.

That’s precisely what John Harper did on that fateful morning in April 1912.

As we prepare our hearts to receive Him afresh this Advent—making room for Him by removing any false notion that our lives as Christians ought to be comfortable, stable, and free of suffering, though not popular, I’m sure, I will remind us all, starting with myself, of our need, privilege and calling to lay down our lives before the God-man we sing about having been born in a manger, remembering He is coming again as promised, soon and very soon now.

Is your heart prepared to receive Him if He comes this very night?

Had God not given John Harper His strength and the grace needed to meet his watery death in the icy waters of the North Atlantic Sea, who is to say if another would have been sent to George Henry Cavell saying, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved!” There are no icy waters today—no sinking ship. However, an SOS is being sent to you directly. Its message? Romans 10:9-10. John Harper’s last words to George Henry Cavell.

Simply put, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved!”

Grab the lifejacket being thrown to you now, friend. Slip it on and be saved. Jesus is coming back for you. Believe it or not. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10.

Revealed.

“God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth” –Ephesians 1:9-10.

The crowd’s thunderous, “…Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” –silent now. Even the treacherous “…Crucify him! Crucify him!” vomited up from the mouths of the ones He had come to save, dried up. His Bloodstained Cross lay discarded, yesterday’s news. The very agent of their supposed victory abandoned now. His Cross, burned to ashes, perhaps? They didn’t want to leave behind even a trace of His Precious Blood, erase all evidence of Him, lest one of His radical followers claim this Bloodstained wood held power, leading others to believe that even in death, He lives. Has power, still. Not magic. Not some religious relic. Rather, Bloodstained wood that will never be silenced. Truth, some tried desperately to seal up in tomb-like silence, behind some weighty stone they mistakenly thought would shut up His claims of being their long-awaited Messiah—once, for all. The King of the Jews sealed neatly away, silent now, finally. Blood cleaned up. Body wrapped up. Problem solved!

But God had a plan.

Long before the Third Day Resurrection of our Lord, even before the Trinity stood over the dark void and spoke, God had a plan in place to redeem all of His children, Jew, and Gentile alike, one, in Christ Jesus. Child of God, Your Father has loved you with an everlasting love. I know, such a mystery is too great to take in. For me, it’s right up there with Jeremiah 1:5, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Wait, what? Even before I was in my mother’s womb? Wouldn’t that imply…

If you didn’t catch how purposefully loved you are after reading Jeremiah 1:5. Hand-chosen, a unique and vibrant thread intricately interwoven into a lavish tapestry far exceeding anything our finite minds and myopic vision can fully take in; all before that tapestry yet existed, then read this. Let it add some other beautiful layer of certainty as to how it is God sees you. “But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

You are His. And, He has redeemed you.

To fully understand the full weight of those two statements, a more than cursory understanding of the ancient Jewish wedding ceremony is helpful here. I won’t get into it now, but I do encourage you to look up a reliable source and read the intricate and detailed process of ancient Jewish weddings. Or back click on the link I’ve provided. Times and customs may have changed, but God’s love and election haven’t.

Ancient Jewish Marriage

It has always been about Jesus—God’s redemptive plan, that is. When Adam and Eve sinned, we catch our first glimpse of “God’s plan” in Genesis. We, God’s children, being covered by the blood of something innocent—a foreshadowing, a sign. God has always given signs to those who have eyes to see. “And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them” –Genesis 3:21. An innocent life had to be taken. Innocent blood was shed. The guilty, covered. That’s you. That’s me. That’s the Gospel Message. The Living proof of John 3:16 foreshadowed in Eden. Sinful man saved by the redeeming Blood of God’s Spotless, Perfect Lamb. His One and only Son, our Lord, Jesus the Christ. The Way. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” –John 14:6.

“God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan. – And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus” –Ephesians 1:9-11;3;6.

Easter is over. The Crown of Thorns vanished, His Cross, ashes. But Jesus is still here. Still very much alive and calling “whosoever will” to Himself. And the Power of His Blood, well, that’s forever. The Blood will never lose Its power—or voice. The work of the Cross is finished. Praise God! But the plan God had for the Cross, its true purpose, continues. I know this with certainty because I’m still here, but that’s for another day. God’s plan to redeem all those chosen in Himself since before eternity past is alive and well today. “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence” –Ephesians 3:12.

Consider this your invitation from God. Accept His love for you, the plans He has just for you. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” –Jeremiah 29:11. Be used by Him, not as man uses you, but be used for God’s glory and honor, weaved into His lavish and beautiful tapestry so resplendent in glory you cannot take it in, yet. But in just a moment, if you’ll but believe, you’ll see as Jesus sees, and every thread will make perfect beautiful sense.

Now I hear you saying, but I have no faith; I don’t know your Jesus. Take heart, friend; Jesus knows you; that’s why He sent me. The truth remains Truth even when you don’t believe it to be Truth. That’s the beauty of Truth, of God. He is unchanging. You can rely on Him, His Truth.

So If you are here, you’re here because God’s called you here. There is no coincidence. You are being invited to join Him; you are one of those spoken of in today’s Scripture. You are part of God’s plan. One He chose in Himself, before the foundations of the world. Accept His offer and come on back home. “Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” –John 3:3.

The Power of the Blood of Jesus.

Pastor Samuel Cordeiro

“In fact under the Law almost everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness [neither release from sin and its guilt, nor cancellation of the merited punishment]”–Hebrews 9:22.

Each year millions of people worldwide celebrate Easter or what many refer to as “Resurrection Sunday.” Churches and home groups everywhere come together to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christmas has no merit if not for Easter; it wasn’t the birth of Jesus that brought us salvation but Jesus’ death and resurrection. Through these, Jesus conquered sin and death. Some of my favorite worship songs are Easter Worship Songs, beautiful songs about the Blood of the lamb. Songs like: “Thank you, Jesus, for the Blood” by Charity Gayle; or the hymn “There is Power in the Blood”; and “Oh the Blood” by Kari Jobe. Those songs always remind me of the powerful Blood of Jesus.

Growing up in a Portuguese-American church, I remember countless instances when someone would share a prayer request during prayer meetings. Almost instantly, a brother or sister in the church would say “O Sangue de Jesus tem poder,” which translates to “There is power in the Blood of Jesus.” My church knew that the answer to that prayer would be found in the Blood of Jesus. They would plead the Blood of Jesus over a situation as part of their prayer, as a declaration. However, to truly understand the power of the Blood of Jesus, we need to start with the question, WHY BLOOD?

The Bible tells us that sin separates us from God.

However, in the book of Leviticus, we find God’s instructions to the Israelites. He makes plain that their sins would be forgiven after the priest offered the bloody sacrifice of an animal, which was a foreshadowing of the death of the Messiah—Jesus Christ, who would come to defeat sin once and for all. In both the Old Testament and New Testament, there would be no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood.

There are six revelations about the Blood of Jesus God spoke to me over the past couple of months:

  1. There is forgiveness and salvation through the Blood of Jesus.

“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” – Matthew 26:28.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” – Ephesians 1:7.

“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary” – Hebrews 10:10;12-13; 18

The power of Jesus’ Blood is the basic, central message of true Christianity—that God the Father sent His one and only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, down to earth in the flesh to physically die on a Cross to save us and give us total and permanent forgiveness for all of our sins. We are not saved by our good works, by going to church, not by donating to the poor; there is only one way you are guaranteed eternal life, and that is because you have placed your faith in Jesus and the power of His shed Blood on that Cross. In Isaiah 1:18, we see forgiveness described as the Blood of Jesus washing away our sins: “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.”

I recently heard this quote “If you are looking only at the blood of Jesus for heaven, you are going to miss out on the power of the blood of Jesus here on earth.”

These words really encouraged me to use the Blood of Jesus as a weapon.

They made me realize that the Blood of Jesus is a weapon in our God-given arsenal. There is power, wonder-working, supernatural power when a Christian pleads the Blood of Jesus over their lives, families, and homes.

  1. The Blood of Jesus Redeems:

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect” –1 Peter 1:18-19.

The definition of redeemed is: “to buy back” or “to save from captivity by paying a ransom.” In the days of slavery, a slave could be bought back by offering an equivalent or superior slave in their place. God chose to buy us back in this exact way – by offering his Son, Jesus, in exchange for us. When God sent His Jesus to Earth, He could have quickly taken him back; Jesus wouldn’t have had to suffer and shed His Blood on that Cross. Yet God literally exchanged His one and only Son, Jesus, so that mankind (you and me) can be freed from sins, slavery, and bondage. Jesus took our sin debt onto Himself. And God stamped it “paid in full.” So now we can sing: “Sin has lost its grip on me.” So if there is a lifestyle choice, bad habit, or any sin in your life that you need to get rid of – plead the Blood of Jesus. Jesus can set you free.

Through Jesus, we have redemption from sin, and we need to take hold of that freedom.

  • The Blood of Jesus Delivers:

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” – Colossians 1:13-14.

“…That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” – Hebrews 2:14.

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” –1 John 3:8.

The Bible makes plain that through Jesus’ physical death on the Cross, when His Blood was shed, Satan and his power were defeated.

So if there is something in your life that you need deliverance from, plead the Blood of Jesus over it. If there is a negative voice in your head speaking lies over you – plead the Blood of Jesus for deliverance from those lies. If something is tormenting you with fear – plead the Blood of Jesus for deliverance over that fear.

And if you are reading this and thinking you are too weak, you don’t have the strength, or perhaps your faith is too small, listen to this:

  • The Blood of Jesus Empowers:

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” –Revelation 12:11.

God has given us the power to overcome, not in our own strength, but by the Blood of the Lamb shed on that Cross and by the word of our testimony. We are empowered to overcome by pleading the Blood of Jesus and declaring our God’s goodness. God gives us authority and use of the spiritual weapon of the Blood of Jesus to deliver us once an attack has come. God also gives us the authority to plead the Blood of Jesus over situations before an attack ever happens.

  • The Blood of Jesus Protects:

In Exodus 12, we can read the story of the first Passover. God sent Moses to rescue the people of Israel from their captivity and slavery to the Egyptians. Since Pharaoh refused to set the Israelites free, God sent ten plagues over Egypt to punish them. These plagues included turning water into Blood, an infestation of frogs, lice, flies, locusts, disease on livestock, and so on. The 10th of these plagues was the death of the firstborn. God told Pharaoh He would allow an angel of death to come through their camp to kill all of their firstborn children. However, before God allowed this plague to come, God promised to protect the Israelites from this plague. God told the Israelites to kill a blemish-free lamb. Then, to put its Blood on the sides and tops of the doorframes of their homes. God told His people that when the angel of death passed by, if he saw the blood on their doorposts, the angel of death would “pass over” their houses, sparing the lives of their firstborns. In other words, the blood of this blemish-free lamb was being used as divine protection before an attack would ever touch their land.“The Blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the Blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt” – Exodus 12:13.

Scripture informs us that at midnight, when the angel of death came by, all the firstborn children died except those of the Israelites who obeyed God’s command. So what does this mean for us in 2022?

In simple words – Jesus is our PASSOVER. In John 1:29 – when John the Baptist sees Jesus approaching, he says, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” The same way the blood of a lamb was used to protect the Israelite families, the Blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, is our supernatural protection today. We no longer need to sacrifice animal blood to forgive our sins or for our protection.

Jesus’ Blood is the ultimate sacrifice, shed once, for all.

When the Blood of the Lamb forms a wall around you, it is difficult for the enemy to penetrate your life and home. Remember, you can plead the Blood of Jesus over your home, over your journey & your means of transportation; you can plead the Blood of Jesus over your children, and, if you are ever in a place you feel afraid or unsure – plead the Blood of Jesus!

  • There is Healing through the Blood of Jesus:

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” – Isaiah 53:5.

Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the crucifixion of Jesus was given him approximately 700 years before the birth of Jesus. Isaiah declares that by his stripes, the bloody wounds on Jesus’ body, WE ARE HEALED. By faith, I encourage you to plead the Blood of Jesus over your body for healing. May it be done to you according to God’s will. When the doctor gives you a diagnosis, plead the Blood of Jesus—by His stripes, Jesus has the power to make you whole.

I am reminded of the chorus of the Hymn “There is Power in the Blood” that says, “There is power, power, wonder-working power in the precious blood of the Lamb.”

The lyrics of this song are written in the present tense, not the past; this can only mean one thing: When the Blood of Jesus was shed some 2,000 years ago, Jesus’ Blood’s saving, supernatural power was not a one-time work’s, it is still working today. The Blood of Jesus is for yesterday, today, and forever. God has given us this weapon, this tool for our spiritual life to be used by faith. When we begin to plead the Blood of Jesus for redemption, deliverance, power, protection, and healing, we declare that the struggles and situations we face are no match against the power of the Cross or Jesus’ resurrection.

As we approach Easter, let us be reminded that the Blood of Jesus shed on Calvary’s Cross has the power for salvation and gives us victory over every situation or trial we face today.

If you have not yet experienced the power of the Blood of Jesus, I encourage you to invite Jesus into your heart today. Ask Him to reveal His love to you. Ask God to forgive you of your sins, then receive the free gift of eternal life through Jesus.

Nets & Fruit. John 21:6

And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.”

Okay, so what do nets, and fruit have in common? And where-on-earth is she going with this? I’m delighted you asked! Why don’t you grab your coffee, settle in, and allow me to explain? Ready? I’ll start with the answer to your question, then dig-in from there. So, it turns out that the answer to what connects nets and fruit is twofold—a mirror image. The cornerstone of their relationship is obedience & connection! Let’s continue, and we’ll see where this twofold relationship leads us

The heart of scripture—a very large part of it at least—is steeped in this one foundational and eternal Truth found in 1 Samuel 15:22. God wants our love (heart, mind, soul, and strength), our obedience, over some gift or service we might offer Him.  “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

But why? Why are obedience and connection so important to God? I believe scripture bears out that the answer to this is, in part, triune. Its first strand, the life-giving heartbeat of obedience, is a genuine love for our Beloved. Thus, our love of God compelling us to obey Him. Obedience’s very breath—surrender. Its thoughts, the sole joy its meekness offers our beloved. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” –1 John 5:3. And the second strand, faithfulness, comes then, and, wrapping itself around such a love says, “I too love deeply and seek only to remain bound to my beloved.” “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”—1 John 2:3-6. And, then, lastly, obedience’s’ final and most reflective quality is that of honor. And the eyes of honor cast their light in such a way that only the beloved is illumined in their stare. “And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence.…”–Colossians 1:18. These triune strands perpetually interlocking, one with the other—resilient. Fixed in their fidelity and devotion, a bond fashioned by their common cause, obedience. Their fibers fixed, yet flexible, always seeking to accommodate each new command of the Beloved—His every desire.

And, when they’re cast then, where the Lover of our soul’s bids us cast them, His blessings inevitably flow—our nets overflowing then, receiving from His never-ending source. “Then the Lord your God will prosper you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your cattle and in the produce of your ground, for the Lord will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers; if you obey the Lord your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.” –Deuteronomy 30:9-10.” In plain speak: obedience will cause your nets to become so full they’ll be bulging at the seams! And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.” –John 21:6.

Now, alongside the fundamental lesson obedience teaches in today’s verse, ever generous, it goes further still by introducing us to connection, its sacred companion. And, as a result of this one introduction, our souls will soon be thusly fortified. The question posed this day, soon answered. Obedience will have succeeded in pointing us towards the mysterious, life-giving consequence of having a connection with the Beloved.

In today’s verse, we witness the bountiful catch the disciples shared when they obeyed Jesus’ command. Certainly, our Father delights in blessing His children in numerous ways—material blessings, much like this catch, being but one of them. The disciple’s nets would never have been filled so had they not listened to—been connected to, obeyed the One who instructed them exactly where to cast those nets. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.” –John 21:3. There’s a lesson in this verse for each believer. For every pastor and evangelist and teacher and prophet. We are not our own. We have been bought with a great price. And nothing—not one thing we do will ever have an eternal impact—aid in helping to escort one soul from death to life, if it’s us deciding where it is we’ll go, and what it is we’re willing to do. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” –John 15:1. We must be wise and guard our heart’s friends. We must be ever mindful of our motives for seeking after God. May our obedience to, and our desire for, our Beloved, never spring-up, like some unruly weed, from a place of self-seeking. Obeying Him simply because we might somehow be rewarded. Remember this, we serve El Roi—the God who sees me—who knows my heart, and its every desire. May our obedience then, my obedience, be born from a genuine desire to draw ever closer to the One from who all blessings flow…

And, as with obedience so too connection. We are reminded throughout Scripture of the supreme importance—the intrinsic necessity of remaining connected—joined—united—intertwined with, a literal part of, our Beloved. Quite literally infused with His very essence. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” –John 15:5.

He tells us quite clearly that without this connection to Him, in Him, with Him—outside of this life-giving union—we can do nothing. Not one thing of eternal value that is. We can do plenty in terms of being selfish and destructive. Just ask Adam and Eve. They can tell you firsthand about what happens to a soul that chooses to break its connection with its source—with El Roi. “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” –Genesis 3:17-19. And in Matthew 7, we hear Jesus share His heart on the absolute, paramount importance of our maintaining our connection with Him. Equally, however, He makes crystal clear the eternally, terrifying consequences of our having deluded ourselves into thinking that we are in fact connected—have this relationship—are grafted into Him simply because we’ve served on a few committees. Went on a missions trip or two. Or have prayed for the sick and lost even. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”—Matthew 7:21-23.

If we were paying attention to what happened in the Garden right before Adam and Eve were banished for their disobedience, then we witnessed the Father’s eternal connectedness to His creation on loving display. (This Messiah who came, and will come again, that all men might have access to a connection with Him—made possible through the obedient sacrifice of Jesus Christ, by the Blood He shed on His Cross for all mankind, putting an end to death and the grave once, for all.) Even here, amid Adam and Eve’s dis-obedience, their deliberate dis-connect, we witnessed this God that so loved the world making a way for us, His children, to be able to return back to Him. In the thick of man’s rejecting their Divine connection, in the very epicenter of man’s disobedience, we witnessed God’s, unfathomable love. His redemptive plan, even then, to offer Jesus to this sin-full, dis-obedient, world on display—so that you and me and him and her might be able to come home again. He shed blood. A foreshadowing of Christ. Putting to death animals that He might wrap Adam and Eve in their bloody skins. “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”–Hebrews 9:22.

God did this so that you and I, if we’ll but obey and slip-on Christ’s Bloodied sacrifice, His Righteousness, might be re-connected eternally, back to the Father.

Friend, if anything you’ve read here today has touched your heart, know that it’s because God loves you and is offering Himself to you. Asking you to connect with Him directly—sincerely, as your Lord and Savior. I pray that you’ll obey. I’d love nothing more than to meet you soon and very soon when we have all been gathered up in Him. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” –Romans 10:9-10.
