Light Up The Darkness!

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” –Matthew 5:14

Jesus did not spill His precious Blood, paying the ultimate ransom—His life—for you to live small, hidden, or fearful of the judgment of mere men, beloved. To blend into a world that is not your home. To “hide” your Light, Christ alive in you, out of fear of what men may say or think about you. I can almost hear the Apostle Paul shouting to you across the ages even now, “God forbid!” He is reminding you, through his writings, doing all he could to save you from committing such a sin. “As far as the Law is concerned I may consider that I died on the cross with Christ. And my present life is not that of the old “I,” but the living Christ within me.” –Galatians 2:20.

Christ in you is your identity now; in case you’ve momentarily forgotten…

You are no longer your own, beloved. You no longer “get to” live hidden away; if indeed you belong to Jesus, that’s impossible. “You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.” –Matthew 7:16-17

Hear me now: I haven’t come to condemn you, rather to remind you, and myself, of who we are and of the unfathomable cost our Lord and Savior paid, that we be afforded such a privilege as to be His Light-bearers in this ever-darkening world. “He alone possesses immortality [absolute exemption from death] and lives in unapproachable Light, whom no man has ever seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal power and dominion! Amen.” –1 Timothy 6:16

Being offshoots of Jesus’ unapproachable Light, we “get to” shine for all to see, directing men then toward our Father; by following Jesus’ example, who lived His life on earth to draw all men to the Father. “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” –Matthew 5:16

Those who belong to this world, are and will continue to, demand you dim your Light, Christ in you, insisting even that a single Source of Light doesn’t exist, instead, that, there are multiple light sources at work in the world; they do their level best to extinguish the One True Light of Christ altogether—as if they held such power—not wanting their sin or rebellion against the One True God revealed. Like their father, they prefer to hide in the shadows, far from the Light of Christ. “You are of your father the devil, and it is your will to practice the desires [which are characteristic] of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father of lies and half-truths.” –John 8:44

But you, child of God, and you whose heart God is tugging on even now, you are, or are being called to carry a Light so Pure, so Holy and alive, it cannot be hidden; you cannot stay hidden.

I believe the Lord sent me to you today to remind you to Whom you belong—and that’s not yourself. You belong to Jesus, and He expects you to do what you were created, in part, to do. And that is to shine His Light into the utter darkness so that in seeing your Light, those in the world will be without excuse, having witnessed its Source. “For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification].” –Romans 1:20

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.” –2 Corinthians 4:6-7

Whatever has been holding you back from letting the Light of Christ in you burn ablaze, or from carrying the Light of Christ within you, I came to encourage you today to turn to, or return to, Christ.

Ask Jesus for the strength to push past the voices of those who call you a Jesus freak.

Those who reject you or who have abandoned you completely because of your devotion to Jesus. That husband, wife, or child, mother or father who has grown cold towards you. The boss who says he’ll fire you if you don’t stop talking to your coworkers about this Jesus, enough already! Stop it! We don’t want to hear about Jesus any more! Don’t you get it! Just go away already…

Take heart, beloved, keep pressing into Christ. He will strengthen you to finish the good works He has called you to do. “We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” –2 Corinthians 4:8-10

Weary soldier, fearful new friend, ask God’s Holy Spirit to fill you, or fill you afresh, if you’ve never asked, with the same fiery Light and power He freely gave those who first prayed in faith believing He would. “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.” –Acts 2: 1-3

Then, let Jesus’ Light, this same Magnificent, Pure, Holy Light that has been piercing the darkness of men’s hearts for millennia, burst forth out of you, like a bridegroom from his bedchamber, unashamed and undeniable. You are God’s messenger: A Light carrier for the King of Kings. You are partnering with heaven when your Light burns brightly and unashamedly before all men—especially those who reject you for His name’s sake. “I tell you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God. / But whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.” –Luke 12:8-9

Blaze on, beloved! In the power of His Might! “Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.” –Daniel 12:3

Friends, you can carry this Magnificent, saving Light of Christ Jesus in you, but first, you must ask Jesus to be Lord and Savior of your life. Won’t you do that right now? Be freed from the darkness and walk in Pure Light… “because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.” –Romans 10:9-10

Walk This Way…

“Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly. Jesus sent him away, saying, “Don’t go back into the village on your way home.” –Mark 8:25-26

Some are sensing a stirring in their spirits. They’re believing God is calling them to a “new thing, a new season, their next.” Maybe God has revealed to some of you what, exactly, that new thing is, making it plain, or plain enough at least, that you have a fairly firm grip on your next assignment. While others sense it, see it — just not quite as clearly as you, yet — for those, it’s more like seeing men as trees— just there, before them, that much is certain, …But I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.” –Mark 8:24

The Word of God tells us that Jesus touched the blind man’s eyes twice in today’s Scripture before the man could see clearly. “Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.” –Mark 8:25

So does your not seeing everything clearly straightaway mean that you haven’t truly received a Word, a new assignment, a “touch” from the Lord? I don’t believe that’s true, personally. Moreover, today’s Scripture seems to refute any misconception about this way of thinking. That said, Scripture does, however, caution the believer to test every spirit, because not everything we believe we’ve heard from God, or a word from God so-called, spoken over us, is truly from God. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit [speaking through a self-proclaimed prophet]; instead test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets and teachers have gone out into the world.” –1 John 4:1

Above all, does what you believe to be from the Lord align with His Word? “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” –2 Timothy 3:16-17

Secondly, if it does, are you seeking Jesus’ timing rather than stepping out on your own? “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” –Ecclesiastes 3:1

Beloved, if you genuinely believe God has placed a new assignment on your heart, that He’s calling you to a new location, into a new ministry, or maybe a marriage, then, before you take one step toward it, you must first ask Jesus to confirm it’s from Him. Then, wait on Him for His answer to each of these fundamental questions before you act—lest you fall. “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” –Proverbs 19:21

Holy Spirit will never go against God’s Word or timing—He can’t.

Circling back then, we definitely know Jesus had already touched this blind man once, so why wasn’t he healed instantly? His vision was made whole the first time? Surely, Jesus had healed others instantly; why not this blind man? “Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?” The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.” –Mark 8:23-24

What’s the reason behind Jesus having touched this man’s eyes twice?

To gain a fuller understanding, we have to take a few steps back—for context’s sake.

A few verses earlier, friends of this blind man had led him to Jesus. Soon after, Jesus had rebuked His own disciples for their lack of sight. Nothing was physically wrong with their eyes, mind you, yet in certain ways, they were just as blind as this man who was physically blind. “You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?” Mark 8:18.

The issue with Jesus’ disciples wasn’t physical; it was spiritual: forgetfulness had rendered them spiritually blind.

Scholars tend to agree the story of the blind man needing to be touched twice by Jesus is a metaphor used in Scripture to help demonstrate how Jesus’ disciples’ spiritual sight took time to develop: become “clear,” if you will, even after their having lived, eaten, slept, walked besides, and witnessed many of Jesus’ miracles by the time they’d encountered this blind man. One such miracle was the feeding of four thousand with just seven loaves of bread and a few small fish they’d found, after which Jesus rebuked them for their lack of “sight.”

“At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in? ‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all? When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said. “And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said. “Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them.

Perhaps many of us don’t yet fully understand, either?

How thankful then we ought to be to serve such a patient, loving Father. A Father who understands our weaknesses and does not condemn us for them; rather, like the much-loved children we are, Jesus corrects our blind spots, bringing clarity and realignment so that we will see clearly.

So could seeing clearly be part of your “next”? Maybe Jesus wants to clear up your vision? Remember, unlike the Pharisees, who chose not to place their faith in Jesus despite all they’d heard and “saw” for themselves, if you’re His, you did.

Still, Jesus loves you too much to leave you seeing “men like trees.”

In His lovingkindness, perhaps part of your new includes Jesus touching your eyes yet again, as he did with that blind man. After all, His desire is for you to see clearly, so He must rid your ‘sight’ of whatever “yeast of the Pharisees or Herod” is affecting your ability to see clearly—compromise, desire for worldly comfort, lack of faith, stubbornness, or self-reliance; none of which we’ll be completely free of until we are with Jesus. “As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.” –Mark 8:15

So for now, we must keep going back to the One who first gave us our sight, asking that He touch our eyes again and again, repenting of the “yeast of the Pharisees” we’ve allowed to dim our vision. Jesus doesn’t want us to take the sins of the past—those things that, to date, have blinded us—into this new thing, new season, assignment, He’s leading you into. “As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.” –Mark 8:15

Friend, God wants you to see clearly, too. To see Him clearly more than anything else, so that you can follow where He wants you to go. Won’t you ask God to give you eyes to see Him and His will, clearly? “For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” –Jeremiah 29:11; 13

 Why didn’t he see clearly straightaway?

What’s the reason Jesus touched this man’s eyes twice?

Could seeing clearly be part of your “next”?

 “But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede.” –Genesis 8:1

After God commanded Noah to build the Ark, instructing him precisely how to build it and providing him with every material needed, God then instructed him on how to stock the Ark: what to put in it and whom. Only then did Noah’s “new beginning” begin; only after God Himself had sealed Noah inside. Yet it had taken Noah between 55 and 100 years, scholars say, to build the Ark. Then, once God had sealed him in and the rains started in earnest, it took nearly another year, more, some say, before Noah’s feet touched dry ground again. In all that time, much like Father Abraham, Noah’s faith didn’t waver. He just kept building and waiting for God’s next…

So, did God’s “remembering” Noah imply somehow that God had forgotten him and those He’d entrusted Noah to care for—help save, all those months adrift atop the waters? Was Noah left out there, forgotten by God, floating along, upon something that, ’til then, neither the world nor Noah had ever seen?

As the Apostle Paul might say, “God forbid!”

And yet, when you’re out there, bobbing around in the proverbial floodwaters, if you will, “waiting on God,” it can, at times, feel as though God has forgotten you. Wouldn’t you agree?

Are you able to imagine how even righteous Noah may have felt had he dropped his guard and let his flesh speak?

I can. I’ve done it.

How I thank Jesus that, because of Him, because of a Love so merciful and complete, we get to choose to live by the faith Christ has afforded us, and not by feelings as tumultuous often, as the sea itself, tossing these fleshly vessels of ours this way and that, still…

But here’s the thing, my seafaring friend, God could never forget you! Never!

As with Noah, God is simply shifting you from what was: that time of trial and hardship, loss, times of testing, to a season of restoration—of new beginnings, literally!

So stay put until the one Who sealed you in opens the door to your fresh start, once again…

God hasn’t forgotten what He’s promised you, beloved…even if the waters seem to be taking forever to dry up, even if you feel as though you’ll never again feel dry ground beneath your feet. Even if what God is calling you to looks so big, so “out-there,” even your dearest friends—most beloved family members—just won’t get it. Truth be told, it’s taking all the faith you have to hold onto such a God-sized vision. “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” –Matthew 9:23-24

Remain faithful. Keep bobbing. Keep sending out the Dove, beloved—God’s Perfect timing will have the final say, certainly, not you. God will indeed bring to fruition the fullness of what feels to you like a too-big plan. When the Dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. He waited seven more days and sent the Dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.” –Genesis 8:11-12

I’ll remind you here, disheartened one: you did not build the Ark on your own; God built it with you, for you, to save you, help restore what’s been lost—help bring about your new beginning—yet again. Every ounce of strength you needed—every supply necessary, even the opposition you’ve incurred, “the seemingly endless bobbing,” all of it, brought about by the Hand of God to strengthen you, deepen your spiritual roots, causing your faith in Him,  your knowledge of His faithfulness to you, to grow to a level that will support your next season. “And my God will liberally supply (fill until full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:19

A level which, minus the flood, the waiting and bobbing, you’d never have reached—all this so that you might be drawn closer to Jesus—made to look more like Him, all the while being used by God to fulfill His good plan and purpose, for your own life, sure, but equally, even more perhaps, the lives of all those you’ll touch in Jesus name. “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved us [so much that He died for us].” –Romans 8:37

So no, beloved, God had not forgotten Noah, nor the covenant promise He’d made to him.

Within just a few short verses of today’s Scripture, we read of God’s fulfilling it. “Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,’ I establish my covenant with you’: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth. I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” –Genesis 9:11;15-16

And since God is not a man that He can lie, beloved, and His Inerrant Word assures us He doesn’t play favorites, you can quite literally rest assured, if the seemingly “too-big” impossible plan, ministry, move, you fill in the blank, was in fact given to you by God, then God alone will bring it to fruition. “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” –Philippians 1:6

Your job, beloved? Keep the faith. Keep trusting God—sending out the Dove until God opens the “Ark” and your feet touch the first-fruit soil of your new beginnings. I pray you won’t forget to praise Jesus for His unending faithfulness to you once He does that “too big,” impossible thing in your life. “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.” –Genesis 8:20

Do you know Jesus, friend? The Only True God, Jesus, who does what no other god, so-called, certainly no man, could ever do—save you, making you a new creation in Him. Jesus, who can make what looks impossible to man—not only possible—but make it actually happen! Sounds too big, right? Impossible almost. That God could take a jacked-up life and make it new? Not like new, but actually new. Yet Jesus does. I can promise you that because it’s His Word, and it’s what Jesus did with mine. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].” –2 Corinthians 5:17

God doesn’t play favorites, friend. He saved Noah, He saved me, and Jesus will save you, too, if, by faith, you sincerely ask Him. Invite Jesus into your life today and watch what He alone will do for you—and through you.

Because your salvation isn’t about you alone, it’s about those God has placed in your “Ark” with you, before you ever thought to answer His call on your life—and yes, it is God Who is calling you today. “For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].” –Ephesians 2:10

But I Didn’t Mean To…

“Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God.” –1 Chronicles 13:10

What had Uzzah done so wrong that God would kill him on the spot? At first read, it’s hard to understand why God would have done this. More so, I believe, if you have an intimate relationship with Jesus, whom you know to be Love itself. Hard, that is, if you’ve let slip your mind the fact that this same, Loving Jesus hates sin and is just. That He is to be revered as the Majestic Glory He is. Exalted as Creator of all things, seen and unseen. Awed, being the only Person who ever said, “Let there be,” and there was; from solar systems to ants to acorns, each was birthed into existence simply because Jesus willed it. Jesus is Lovingkindness Itself, and He’s just; they’re inseparable.

Thus, God has the inherent right to do whatsoever He will with His children and His creations.” But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? ‘Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, Why did you make me like this?’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?” –Romans 9:20-21

Yes, Jesus freely lavishes grace upon us; still, He abhors sin.

We’ve all fallen short, friends. We sin.

We’re guilty of forgetting how worthy Jesus is of our utmost respect, obedience, and reverence. Do we forget intentionally?

I certainly hope not—otherwise, we ought to question if we’re truly saved…

But what if unintentionality and familiarity are what make us and Uzzah akin in our sin of forgetfulness?

We did it. We committed the sin; we’re definitely guilty, but we didn’t mean to.

To even begin to wrap our heads around why God killed Uzzah for what some earthly parents may have forgiven, we must be open to witnessing God’s Love for us through the lens of His Holiness—which is inextricably linked to His justice; they’re inseparable—we cannot pull them apart.

We can’t choose one but not the other as though it belongs in the enemy camp.

God’s Holiness and His justice are kin—

Scripture proves it to us…

Hand in hand with John 3:16, God’s Love and justice, His Holiness, are perfectly displayed in Romans 5:8-9. “But God demonstrates his own Love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!”

God’s Love and justice are foundational elements of His salvation:

His justice demands that sin be punished, atonement be made, and moral order be kept—punishment is a judicial requirement. While His Love is beneficent: Love spares, forgives, defends, covers, protects, blesses, goes to bat for, if you will. And nowhere in Scripture do we witness a greater example of the conjunctivity between God’s justice, Holiness, and Love than at the Cross of Christ.

There, the jurisdictional requirements God demands be kept that justice be served, and moral order maintained were met when Jesus’ Perfect Love willingly offered His sinless life in exchange for our sin-filled lives; satisfying God’s demand for justice, all the while sparing humanity through His perfect atonement. Hence, protecting us from the wrath of God, which our sins so justly deserve. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” –Romans 6:23

Now you might be saying, okay, with you so far, but how does all of what you laid out connect to God killing Uzzah?

Regarding Uzzah specifically, he and his clan had been chosen by God to carry the Ark of God using specified carrying poles—the Ark should never have been placed on a common cart. In addition, Uzzah was not a priest; he was a Levite, meaning he had no business touching Holy things. This included his reaching out to steady the Ark of God—however well-intentioned he was. God had forewarned His people that anyone who did such a thing would die. “When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all its furniture, as the camp sets out, after all that [is done, but not before], the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them [using the poles], so that they do not touch the holy things, and die. These are the things in the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle) which the sons of Kohath are to carry.” –Numbers 4:15

The Levites (Uzzah’s tribe) had hosted the Ark of God for two years. Had Uzzah’s proximity to God’s Presence inadvertently allowed him to become too comfortable being around God? Had he forgotten the great honor which had been bestowed upon him—forgetting then God’s Holiness? Maybe, his sheer proximity to the very Presence of God had bred a certain irreverence in Uzzah unawares?

Here, brothers and sisters, is where you and I have far more in common with Uzzah than we’d care to admit.

We, too, forget—however unintentionally—that we serve a Holy God, and that His Commandments, those “guardrails” He’s lovingly put in place to protect us, aren’t suggestions, they’re commands that, when broken, bring consequences.

Perhaps, like Uzzah, we’ve gotten so “familiar” with Jesus that we’ve forgotten—I forget, because God knows, ashamedly, I’m guilty—just how Holy our God is.

Maybe because we live within a culture—even some church cultures, sadly—that stresses “God is Love” and He is, but fails to teach and remind us that, because God is Love Itself, it doesn’t mean He’s quit being just and moral. God hates sin.

The fact that Jesus is a friend who sticks closer than a brother doesn’t change that.

Will we see Uzzah in eternity? I believe so.

God seemingly used Uzzah, as He did Pharaoh, as He can with anyone He so chooses, as a vessel through which He displayed Divine retribution and instilled Godly fear in His people. “So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills”. –Romans 9:18. God reminds us to keep Holy what is Holy —God also, according to His Word, knows the heart and secret thoughts of all men—Uzzah’s included. “For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion.’ So then God’s choice is not dependent on human will, nor on human effort [the totality of human striving], but on God who shows mercy [to whomever He chooses—it is His sovereign gift]. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “I raised you up for this very purpose, to display My power in [dealing with] you, and so that My name would be proclaimed in all the earth.” So then, He has mercy on whom He wills (chooses), and He hardens [the heart of] whom He wills.” –Romans 9:15-18

Uzzah stood on the very ground God used to teach His people the ultimate lesson on the importance of obedience and keeping Holy things—Holy; of not forgetting His Word or the laws He had already given them—those guardrails given to protect them from His judgment and His wrath.

So, is it possible that the ground where God struck Uzzah dead was a place of foreshadowing, pointing us towards that place where Jesus’s finished work would, one day, appease God’s wrath—that ground where heaven met earth, where every Blood-bought believer is grateful exists—I know I certainly am. “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.” –Galatians 4:4-5

Some may find this teaching hard, perhaps questioning why I didn’t just skip to the part where God’s love for Uzzah saves him.

My reply is simply this: I must be obedient to share with you what God places on my heart, to not shrink back because it may be hard for some to take in—I leave God to touch your minds and hearts as only He can. As for me, I will say as Paul did: “For I never shrank or kept back or fell short from declaring to you the whole purpose and plan and counsel of God.”

God loves you, friend, and He wants a relationship with you. He’s made a way to have that with you through His Son, Jesus. Have you accepted Jesus ‘ unfathomable free gift of salvation? If not, ask Him to come into your heart today—mean it, and He will. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” –Romans 5:8-9

Don’t Buy The Lie; It Is Not Too Late.

“One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? ‘ ” Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” –Luke 23:39-43

The world had sentenced him to death. According to them, his life was over, irredeemable.

But God had a different plan for the one the world had written off as used up. Why did God choose the last moments of his life to reveal Himself to this all but dead man and not years before, when his life may have made a difference? When he could have been used to help save others, or had time to preach the Gospel that turns hearts back to God? Only God knows. Why does God save any of us when He does? “Woe to him who strives with his Maker! —a worthless piece of broken pottery among other pieces equally worthless [and yet presuming to strive with his Maker]! Shall the clay say to him who fashions it, What do you think you are making? or, Your work has no handles?” –Isaiah 45:9

Had this man been guilty of being imprudent with the precious commodity of time God had afforded him, spending it on foolishness, sin, and selfishness? One doesn’t end up hanging on a cross because they made all the right choices in life.

And though Scripture doesn’t tell us this man’s name, age, or past offenses—only what he’d done to end up hanging beside Jesus on a cross —historical writings do; they suggest he was a man of a certain age, and his name was Dismas. And even with all Dismas may have gotten wrong in his less-than-illustrious life because God chose him to be His child before the foundation of the world, we’re still talking about him today. “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” –Ephesians 1:4

No, you will not find Dismas’s name written in Hebrews 11— “Hall of Faith” — but because of one predestined and eternal stroke of God’s celestial pen, you will find it written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. “But now, God’s Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob, the One who got you started, Israel: “Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end— Because I am God, your personal God, The Holy of Israel, your Savior. I paid a huge price for you: all of Egypt, with rich Cush and Seba thrown in! That’s how much you mean to me! That’s how much I love you! I’d sell off the whole world to get you back, trade the creation just for you.” –Isaiah 43:1-4

So why am I talking about Dismas today?

What does a thief on a cross have to do with you and me and our lives?

Nothing—if you’re of a certain age and can look back over your life with no regrets. But can you?

If you’re anything like me, you can’t.

Looking back at my life, it resembled Dismas’s far more than I’d care to admit. Like him, I too was guilty of a lifetime of sin, of foolishly spending the precious commodity of the time God had afforded me, my youth and beyond, on sin and selfishness. I, too, was written off on more than one occasion by others and myself, as irredeemable: too stained, too far gone.

Can you relate to Dismas?

Friend, brothers, I thank God there’s no such thing as too late.

If there is breath in our lungs—or in the lungs of the one the world has written off, God still has a plan and purpose for our lives—or theirs.

Like Dismas, there’s a purpose for which you and I were created. No. We don’t all end up in the Hall of Faith, but I’m praying your name is found in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

There’s no sin or even a lifetime of sin so heinous that God cannot redeem it, save it, making it clean, holy, made ready to use as a living testimony to save another. “For this reason he also called you through our gospel so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” –2 Thessalonians 2:14

Dismas is a perfect example of this Truth.

God is still using Dismas’s life to call others to Himself by reminding them, through His Word, that it’s never too late to ask God for forgiveness—to save them. After all, part of why God chooses us is to use us to reach whoever He will, however He will, whenever He will—just as He did Dismas or through this teaching…

It’s not too late.

You’re not too old—too far gone—been through too much, smoked, drank, or had sex with too many, to be saved—washed clean, made new in Christ.

It’s what’s hidden in your heart, friend, buried beneath all that hardcore, gangsta exterior —what does only God see and know of you? Are you sorry, truly, for all that you’ve wasted—stolen from God?

Time, after all, belongs to Him.

Are you humble enough to admit you got it all wrong for so long that now your only hope is redemption? Forgiveness and a second chance to serve Jesus and others.

Are you willing to use whatever breath God may leave in your lungs to ask His forgiveness for all that you’ve done? That is what God desires for you—just like it was for Dismas. God has a plan for your life—and what if God will use these last minutes He’s afforded us all to do something so life-changing in you and through you that another soul is won to Him?

Nothing is impossible with God, friend.

He specializes in using those the world wrote off as irredeemable—useless, common. I know this to be true because I was one of “them”—until that moment, He looked at me and said, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you [from captivity]; I have called you by name; you are Mine!”

 So, for as long as there is breath in my lungs, as long as I have use of every faculty God has afforded me, by His grace, I will use them to point you and anyone else I can toward Jesus. In His mercy, Jesus saved me, not only from the wages of my sins, death, but for Himself—Jesus wants me, just as He wants you.

Jesus saw me—called me by name, just as He’s doing to you right now, and for that alone, I am His, eternally.

That is my choice.

You must make your own.

Perhaps rereading today’s Scripture again will help you decide?

As you do, notice, there’s no altar call at the foot of the cross. Dismas didn’t recite a sinner’s prayer—he was simply and truly remorseful for his sins, all of them.

God saw his repentant heart and forgave Dismas.

He’ll do the same for you whether you ask him in church, driving down the road, in the shower, wherever. It’s all about your heart—and your sincerity.

It’s not about where you cry out to God—only that you mean it when you do.

We never hear anything more about that other criminal who hung alongside Jesus—only what Jesus says to Dismas, who recognized that Jesus was the only One who could save him. Through this, we learn how God will use anyone He so chooses to point others to Himself—notice, too, how God rewarded Dismas.

No, Dismas didn’t make it into Hebrews 11, “Hall of Faith,” yet God is still using Dismas today to point us toward Jesus.

If there is breath in your lungs, friend, it’s not too late for you and for God to use you to save another…

The Narrow Road

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” –Matthew 7:13-14

I recently read an online article that stated, “If you keep choosing easy, don’t complain when life gets hard. This is a truth most people don’t want to hear, because easy feels good in the moment. But here’s the cost no one talks about. Easy choices build weak habits. And weak habits quietly shape a hard life.”

To this, I would add, choosing to serve self rather than Jesus may give the impression of being “easier”; having no god but self to serve leaves your ability to choose wide open; to “blaze our own trail,” if you will. But here’s the thing about ways being left wide open before us; we can just as easily lose our way as choose our way when we take them. “There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but its end is the way of death.” –Proverbs 14:12

Unlike many other of God’s creations, we were not created to roam free—contrary to those beautiful, enticing travel posters and vaca ads inviting us to do so.

You and I, dear friend, were created to live within the parameters of relationship—with God first and above all, with family, and within a community; that is God’s biblical plan. How He intends us to live, and designed the model He’s given us for forming communities.

In today’s scripture, we learn work is required of us—a concrete choice must be made if we’re to enter through the narrow gate, a metaphor for heaven. We’ve been afforded the unfathomable privilege of “getting to” choose which gate we’ll use—wide or narrow? Whom we’ll serve—or not serve, with our brief time on this earth. But know this: every man alive is serving something or someone—no man lives free of that choice; even your not choosing is, in fact, your choice.

Now, before I move on, I’ll stop here to clarify a foundational, biblical Truth: contrary to what you may have heard or been taught, God’s infallible Word assures us that salvation will never be achieved through our works.

Salvation is a free gift given to us by God alone, through Jesus alone, via God’s Holy Spirit, period. “For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God; not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation].” –Ephesians 2:8-9

If we could do anything to earn salvation/the forgiveness of our sins, there would have been no reason for Jesus to have ever been born. “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.” –Romans 5:17

The point of the story I read online and the point Jesus made in today’s Scripture verse run paralell: Choosing to take the easy way out, the path of least resistance, the “I’m a good person, I follow the rules so why shouldn’t I get into heaven, too,” road, will, in the end, only lead to a man’s ultimate destruction—eternal separation from Jesus. Taking the easy way out now might look good from the outside, but it offers no eternal value within.

Jesus once addressed the heart behind such deceptive life choices as He spoke to the religious leaders of His day. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” –Matthew 23:27-28

These men chose what was easiest for them: to stick to what they knew and believed to be true, rather than open their hearts to the possibility that Jesus was, in fact, who He claimed to be—their Savior. Man’s choice to serve any god but Jesus, the One True God, or no god at all, is really just rebellion disguised as freedom. “Jesus said to him, “I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” —John 14:6

It’s man’s rebellious flesh determining for itself what it will or will not do, is willing to sacrifice, or not, in this life: time, energy, money, love, service, or anything else that may interfere with attaining its end goal—gain, relaxation, and pleasure now—because he’s earned it. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”–Matthew 6:24

Yet it’s here, in man’s insatiable pursuit of self-gratification—with its unquenchable thirst for freedom and more, where mere moral limits will ultimately betray such men in the end. “They are doomed and their fate is eternal misery (perdition); their god is their stomach (their appetites, their sensuality) and they glory in their shame, siding with earthly things and being of their party.” –Philippians 3:19

Concerning the choices you make today, “Weak habits quietly shape a hard life,” said the author of the article I spoke of at the beginning of this teaching. Speaking of life now and eternal, Jesus cautions you to: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Why?

Because soon, and very soon, every man will lose his ability to choose the narrow way, having chosen not to follow it himself, he will, by default, have chosen the broad way instead, which leads to hell. “The authority of the name of Jesus causes every knee to bow in reverence! Everything and everyone will one day submit to this name—in the heavenly realm, in the earthly realm, and in the demonic realm. And every tongue will proclaim in every language: “Jesus Christ is Lord YAHWEH,” bringing glory and honor to God, his Father!” –Philippians 2:10-11

Friends, Christ has afforded all of us the unfathomable freedom to choose freely for ourselves life or death—the narrow way, with its sacrifices, trials, and demands in this life, certainly—or the broad way. A life of seeming ease now, but which comes with an inestimable price tag in the end—eternal separation from God.

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.” –Luke 19-25

Every man must choose for himself, friend—and remember, not choosing is, in fact, your choice.

I pray you choose wisely, because Jesus loves you and hell was never meant for you, but for Satan and his minions. Friend, regardless of the choices you’ve made in life thus far, if you have breath in your lungs, it’s not too late for you to ask Jesus for His forgiveness. People send themselves to hell, this place of eternal torment and separation, not God. I share this with you in love, hoping to spare you from taking the seemingly easy path now and, instead, choosing the narrow Way that leads to Life. “Continually pursue peace with everyone, and the sanctification without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.” –Hebrews 12:14

No Greater Assurance.

“And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.” –John 5:25

Assurance, as defined by the world, in this case, by Oxford Languages: a positive declaration intended to give confidence; a promise; confidence or certainty in one’s own abilities.

Assurance, as defined in Acts 17:31, by the Living God: “He has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Let me ask you, is a declaration of assurance given by a man, a mayor, president, king, or statesman, even the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, actual assurance?

Does such a promise made by any of these alleviate your fears?

Do you rest at night trusting that a man can fulfill, to the utmost, every promise he’s made regarding your safety and well-being?

Before you answer, stop and think about the current state of this world, I mean globally, not just your little corner of it.

Take a moment now and call to mind, if you can, all the promises you’ve heard recently from presidents, statesmen, and kings of countries; mere men, each one, educated men, certainly. Experienced, we certainly hope so. Well-intended? Call me naïve, but yes, I do believe that most men who seek to lead others start out well-intentioned, wanting the best for those who have put their trust in them and aiming to do their best for them.

Yet, at the end of the day, I have learned that the best of men are, at best, just men, and being created beings, will always fall short of their highest and best intentions; I know I am most certainly guilty of this.

But there is One who has never broken a promise—not a single one. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” –Numbers 23:19

One who assures us, present tense, that He will do all and everything He has spoken, fulfilling every promise He’s made from the beginning of time, before time, more accurately, to this very day. “For no word from God will ever fail.” –Luke 1:37

Jesus has never failed—not once, because what He says He has heard from His Father, El Elyon, God Most High, Creator of us all and of things seen and unseen. “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.” –John 12:49

And everything He does is in perfect alignment with the Father’s will. “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” –John 6:38.

This same Jesus, Christ the Lord, who can do all things but fail, says this. “There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.” –John 12:48-50

At any time, any man can assure you of anything, friends, this much we know; it’s the way of the world. The question, then, is not whether someone can assure you, but whether they can put legs under their assurance. Which brings up a thought: do you trust men in the same way you trust the chairs you sit on? An action, like other actions, people do without much thought. You sit automatically, yet seldom, if ever, do you question or give thought to the stability of the chair you’re quite literally placing the full weight of your trust on—

Here’s my point, friends. If you watch the news, even briefly, or glance at the headlines of most newspapers, or follow online threads, you can’t have missed that this world is changing 2 fast and 2 furious, for all you action movie buffs, except this is no movie, it’s real life. Your life.

I’m curious: who are you trusting to keep you, your family, your children, and loved ones safe from harm?

Now, before you answer or say that what you see happening elsewhere in the world will never happen to you, not here in good ole’ US of A, think again, because it can.

Hear me now. I pray earnestly that such hardships and fear never touch you. I pray God keep you and all those you love safe, in the palm of His Sovereign Right Hand. But above this, because Jesus has assured us, again, present tense, both saved and yet saved alike, that in this world, even with all the assurances we’re handed by each other or those well-intended officials, the president and all the good fighting men willing to lay down life and limb to protect us, we will, nonetheless, have troubles.

I’m not trying to be a Debbie-downer, friends, I’m simply sharing with you what Jesus assured us of, read it here for yourself: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” –John 16:33

What things is Jesus referring to?

To read the full account of all that Jesus assures us will happen, read the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 24. Here’s a snippet to get you started. “Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” –Matthew 5-13.

Sound familiar?

Scholars tell us that Jesus’s birth fulfilled some 300 Old Testament prophecies concerning Him. Probability studies conducted by the mathematician Peter Stoner suggest that the odds of Jesus fulfilling just “eight” of the over 300 Messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament are 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. For those of us who are not mathematicians, that’s 1 in 100 quadrillion. (These calculations were published in “Science Speaks” by Peter Stoner.)

And whether mathematically correct or not, the Bible makes plain that Jesus has fulfilled every Old Testament prophecy concerning Him. From His birth in Bethlehem and being born of a virgin: Micah 5:2; Isaiah 7:14, to His ministry: Isaiah 61:1-2, to His betrayal and death: Zechariah 11:12; Ps. 22:7-8,16, culminating in Jesus’ burial and Resurrection: Isaiah 53:9; His being buried with the rich: Isaiah 53:9 and His resurrection: Psalm 16:10, Jesus has fulfilled every single one of these.

So, why would anyone think that Jesus won’t fulfill those yet-to-be-fulfilled?

Since none of us are equipped nor were we created to go it alone, my hope and prayer for you in these turbulent, trying times, is that you have or will this day, put the full weight of your trust in Jesus, who can help you navigate the turbulent waters of our times, steadying you, and leading you through what looks like the thing sent to take you out. No mere man, any man, from any political party, whether He be a president, king, or statesman, nor a Declaration written by mere men, regardless of their well-intentionedness, can do this.

So I pray the full weight of your trust will rest squarely and immutably on Jesus, the only one who can. He faithfully saved twelve others who put their trust in Him while in a storm. How? He commanded what was threatening them to be still. “When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” –Mark 4:38;41.

God has afforded you the privilege of making many choices in this life, friend, yet He has given you only One sure hope: His Son, Jesus. Will you put the full weight of your trust in Him?

We’re Not So Different.

“Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!” –Acts 5:3-4.

There are many ways in which men try to cover their sin. By pretext and presence, apology and self-vindication, they acquit themselves of all criminality, and put a fine gloss upon every foul delinquency. Excuse-making is the commonest trade under heaven. –Charles H. Spurgeon. (An excerpt from a sermon entitled “Two Coverings and Two Consequences.”)

From the beginning, it has never been about “stuff” or our having it—God loves to bless His children. Instead, it has always been about the condition of our hearts: allowing ourselves to be possessed by our possessions. Our putting created things above the One who created all things; allowing this to happen means we have broken God’s First Commandment. “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. “You must not have any other god but me.” –Exodus 20:2-3.

Regarding His 2nd Commandment, God spoke explicitly to Moses about idols of any kind, our not making, possessing, or worshipping any carved or graven images. “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.” –Exodus 20:4-5.

We can trace these two foundational Truths to the Ten Commandments God gave Moses.

The first, if not heeded and obeyed, leads directly to the breaking of the second.

With this in mind, let’s examine a couple we meet in Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira. Through their deliberate actions of lying and lack of faith in God, we’ll witness a perfect example of how breaking God’s First Commandment opens us up to breaking His Second Commandment.

How?

When anything other than God is given first place in our hearts—the moment we put anyone or anything above God—that act is the very definition of idolatry. Ananias and his wife were guilty of idolatry and lying to the Holy Spirit. By holding back some of the proceeds they’d received from selling their land “for a rainy day,” Ananias and Sapphira deliberately put faith in money above their faith in God—worshiping the created thing over their Creator. “Now a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife’s full knowledge [and complicity] he kept back some of the proceeds, bringing only a portion of it, and set it at the apostles’ feet.” –Acts 5:1-2.

With this one duplicitous act, they lied to God. Essentially, they said, “Lord, we’re saying we believe in You and Your ability to care for us and meet our needs, but in case we’re wrong, we’re holding back a bit to look after ourselves.” 

They also lied to Peter and all those within the community of faith by deliberately putting their needs above everyone else’s and the newly agreed-upon ethos established for the benefit of the nascent Church community: “Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.”  –Acts 4:32;34-35.

Hence, Ananias and Sapphira broke not only the First but also the Second Commandment, demonstrating that money was not only their God but, by definition, their idol. “And Peter said, ‘How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this?” –Acts 5:9.

Some may say, “But wait, money is not a graven image.” Their assertion would be wrong.

Both then and now, currency has borne the engraver’s mark. Whether the face of an animal, the depiction of a city or ruler such as Ceasar, or, in the case of more modern currency, Presidents such as Washington, Lincoln, or Frankin. Each image was carved or etched to produce its ancient or modern likeness. As King Solomon assured us: “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” –Ecclesiastes 1:9.

Others may say, “But wait, Ananias and Sapphira didn’t have the full council of God like we do. Will God blame us for being prudent?”

Ananias and Sapphira were not prudent. Saving money is not a sin, but that’s a teaching for another day.

They were liars who bet against God. They were part of the New Testament Church and, like the Apostles and all their brothers and sisters within this new community of believers, had heard the Gospel preached. Moreover, the Spirit of the Living God was at work in them. They knew that lying and deceit were wrong. “The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.” –Acts 4:33.

But let us not think more highly of ourselves than we ought, saying, “That was then and this now, we have God’s Word. We know better!” Unlike Ananias and Sapphira, we would never do such a thing!

Then, let me ask you: When was the last time you held something back from God, or, more to the point, put something or someone ahead of Him? Yourself included?

I ask this not to bring condemnation but rather conviction.

I ask that it might cause you, as it did me, to pause for a moment and seek the Holy Spirit’s answer, not our own. We can’t trust our heart to answer this rightly because it will always oppose God’s Spirit by its very nature. “The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.” –Galatians 5:17.

Truth be told, beloved, we are not so unlike Ananias and Sapphira.

Not fully surrendering to God whatever we have pledged to give Him means that we have robbed God just as surely as they did. Being a covenant people, made one in Jesus in the New Covenant relationship, means we have agreed to put God first in all things. Surrendering even our very lives to Jesus, having claimed they are no longer our own. And the moment we break God’s First Commandment, we also break His Second.

Knowing this about ourselves, that selfishness that lurks within us, has lurked within our brothers and sisters before us, how grateful and thankful we ought to be to our Bridegroom, Jesus, for being the atonement for our sins. And to our Father, who washes us clean of them all, remembering them no more because of Jesus and the Sinless Blood He shed to wash us clean from all our unrighteousness.

And we know and rejoice in the Truth that Jesus’ Blood is no match for our sins, beloved, even when we let Satan into our hearts, breaking God’s Commandments—just as Ananias and Sapphira did. “But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Therefore, since we have now been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” –Romans 5:8-9.

God’s Word assures us that all men have sinned and fall short of God’s Perfect Standard, but He also assures us that His heart is that none perish—that means you, dear friend. Like me and the rest of those who call Jesus Lord, you too can be saved by repenting your sins and asking Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of your life. Don’t follow Ananias and Sapphira’s example by betting against God; they lost their lives! Today, God asks that you call out to Him that He might save you. “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” –2 Peter 3:9.

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” –Ephesians 4:4-6.

The older I get, the more I understand that it is not all about me; I’m only one member of Christ’s Body, the Church. Maybe I had an “all about me” mindset when I was younger, but that is no longer true. As I’ve grown older and wiser, I’ve gotten better at seeing the big picture. One I was incapable of understanding when I was young, for instance, like recognizing things God has planned for me and the family He has given me. I know for sure the Church He has rooted me and my family in, and his plans for all these are far greater than I could ever have imagined. Isn’t that just like God, though? To give and show us “exceedingly and abundantly above all we could ask or hope for.”

It’s mind-blowing to think that God has so much more to reveal to us. Having faith in Jesus makes life more enjoyable and bearable; by faith, the trials of this world fall by the wayside.

While in prison, God spoke to the prophet Jeremiah. “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” –Jeremiah 33:3.

God also tells Jeremiah, “For I know the thoughts that I think of you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope” –Jeremiah 29:11.

Knowing God’s perfect plan for my life is secure in Him brings me great comfort.

God tells Jeremiah these things so he will encourage the nation of Israel by sharing with them God’s great plans—plans for good, not harm.

As followers of Jesus, we should be encouraged because we have been grafted into these promises. In his writing to the Church in Galatia, the Apostle Paul reminds us of this: “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.” –Galatians 3:29.

Brothers and sisters, God has not forgotten His promises to His children, to you.“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” –Romans 8:16-17.

This single Truth is for each of us; it is greater than any of us.

As the Church, we need to come alongside one another to edify, pray, and submit ourselves to God—not just as individuals but as one Body, united. Men, women, and youth united as one voice praising our Lord Jesus. An army of believers, ready, waiting for Jesus’ return.

Jesus told His disciples, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another as I have loved you. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” –John 15:34-35.

We are to walk in unity and love one another.

Did you catch that?

Your brother and sister in the Church are not your enemies.

We only have one common enemy, and he is Satan. He is a thief and a liar. He wants nothing more than to take you and your whole family out. Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” –John 10:10.

We are called to love one another with brotherly love.

Granted, not every personality is our cup of tea; some personalities may be more abrasive, while some are more sensitive. As a result, they may clash with each other, yet we are all needed in the Body of Christ. The apostle Paul writes: “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.” –Romans 12:10-13.

 The Apostle Paul reminds us: “For as the body is one and has many members, but all members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free–and all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many.” –1 Corinthians 12:12-14. Jesus is the One who connects us all, uniting us as One in Him, as each one of us contributes whatever gifts God has given us.

You are valued, brothers and sisters, deeply loved by Jesus.

You’re a treasure in the kingdom of God, carrying the Holy Spirit everywhere you go, bearing fruit in season for the glory of our Father.

As I started out saying, when I was younger, I may have thought everything was about me.

Today, as one belonging to Jesus—because of His work in my life, I know for certain it is not about me in the least; it’s all about Jesus.

My prayer is that we put away the divisive squabbling and get out of our flesh, our earthly mindsets. The flesh will never agree with the things of the Spirit because it does not comprehend the workings of God. After all, God is Spirit. Jesus told Nicodemus, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, you must be born again. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” –John 3:6-8.

Let us link up together, brothers. Time is growing short, and our pettiness must stop. We are called to be the Church, to be faithful with all God has given us. If He came today, would Jesus find us being His Church? not according to world standards of what the Church is or should be, but according to the standards God has decreed through His Son Jesus.

I pray that this teaching has edified and has spoken unity into your lives and that all who proclaim Jesus as Lord will be saved. I invite you to come to our Lord Jesus, repent your sins, and ask Him into your heart. Today is the day of salvation. Jesus says, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” –Mark 1:15. Amen.

“On the way to Egypt, at a place where Moses and his family had stopped for the night, the Lord confronted him and was about to kill him. But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet with the foreskin and said, “Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” (When she said “a bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision. ) After that, the Lord left him alone.” –Exodus 4:24-26.

On the biblical timeline, Moses followed Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and was aware of the Lord’s command that every Hebrew male must be circumcised. So, though the placement of today’s Scripture reads as odd, like an aside, the fact that God was wrathful and confronted Moses shouldn’t surprise us. Why? Moses knew better. He knew all male children were to be circumcised. Yet, this man God had chosen to lead His people to freedom—into the land He’d promised Father Abraham—had not obeyed the command of the Lord by circumcising his own son.

So much of today’s passage of Scripture leaves me scratching my head. It takes someone far more versed than I am in biblical history and its rites and rituals to more fully understand these “say what!” verses.

Why hadn’t Moses circumcised his son?

How did the Lord confront Moses?

And what are we meant to take away from God wanting to kill Moses but not following through with it? Scripture doesn’t give us much to go on, so we must be good Bereans and find the corner pieces to this puzzle before attempting to fill it in.

Our first and most noteworthy corner piece is obedience—or the lack thereof. Today’s verses make it abundantly clear Moses had not circumcised Gershom, his son. “But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son.”

 Why did Moses disobey a command He knew was from God?

Had Moses considered acquiescing to the Midianite, pagan tradition of circumcision to appease his wife or father-in-law, perhaps, neglecting entirely the command of God given to Father Abraham? The Midianite tradition of circumcision had likely been explained to Moses or was one he may have seen carried out by Jethro, his father-in-law, a priest of Midian. A tradition apparently well known to his Midianite wife, Zipporah, as she was the one who broke with this tradition and circumcised their son, to assuage the Lord’s anger by touching Gershom’s bloodied foreskin to Moses, marking him as not only her husband but as a bridegroom of blood. “But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet with the foreskin and said, “Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” (When she said “a bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision.) After that, the Lord left him alone.”

With all its question marks, one thing we know for sure is this: Had God wanted Moses dead, he’d have killed him. So, was God’s confronting Moses meant to scare him straight, so to speak? Zipporah too? Since these two were now one flesh in marriage, was this threat by God a wake-up call for Moses, making no bones about Moses needing to obey Him above everyone—his wife and wife’s family included? “Be faithful in obeying the Lord your God. Be careful to keep all His Laws which I tell you today.” –Deuteronomy 28:1.

So much is seemingly lost to us in this ostensibly placed verse. And yet, if we search the Books of the Bible, we’ll see a pattern emerge surrounding the shedding of blood and circumcision.

The shedding of blood.

This same Moses, who Zipporah smears with the fresh blood from their son’s circumcised foreskin, was commanded by God to smear the blood of a sacrificial lamb on the doorposts and lintel of every home the Hebrews would stand inside while eating its roasted meat along with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. “That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord” –Exodus 12:8-12.

They ate poised and at the ready as the angel of death passed over their homes, sparing the firstborn of every Hebrew family. “Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and brush the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out the door of his house until morning. When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. And you are to keep this command as a permanent statute for you and your descendants.” –Exodus 12:22-24.

There are times when looking back is necessary. It helps us connect past events to those yet to come; Hebrews 9:22 is a prime example of the connection between the old and the new. “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

Some scholars say between 1000, and 1500 years separated Moses and Jesus’s lives. No one knows with absolute certainty the exact times between the end of Moses’ ministry and the beginning of Jesus’, but what they all seem to agree on is the blood of that slain Passover lamb whose blood was smeared over the doorposts and upon the lintel of every Hebrew home, was the foreshadowing of the coming Messiah, Jesus. Emmanuel, God with us, who, being fully God yet fully man, was Himself circumcised on the 8th day, according to the law. “And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.” –Luke 2:21.

This sinless Lamb of God, willingly slain to atone for the sins of the world, whose Blood washes the most sin-stained of hearts white as snow; it’s through this Bridegroom of Blood—our Kinsman Redeemer—that we, His Bride, are saved. Our lives are spared from the wrath of God that will be poured out on a God-rejecting, sinful world.

Now, in order to trace this atoning Blood, you’d have to return to the Garden of Eden. Because if, as you read, you’re paying attention, you’d recognize Jesus’ sacrificial death foreshadowed there. Adam and Eve have sinned. So we read in Genesis 3:21, God kills some innocent animals and uses their bloodied skins to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness. “And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.” In contrast, the shedding of the blood of these innocent animals foreshadows the shedding of Jesus’s Innocent Blood to atone not only for Adam and Eve’s sins but for the sins of the whole world. “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” – 1 John 2:2.

Yet if we truly want to trace Jesus Bloodline, we’d have to go back to a time that stands outside of time as we understand it—back to the place where our Triune God has always existed, because it’s there, in that timeless place, where we first read about the Spotless Lamb who’d be slain for the sins of the world. “And all the inhabitants of the earth will fall down in adoration and pay him homage, everyone whose name has not been recorded in the Book of Life of the Lamb that was slain [in sacrifice] from the foundation of the world.” –Revelation 13:8.

How blessed are we, His Bride, to have been washed in the Spotless Blood of Jesus—our sins, removed from us and remembered by God no more, made right with God by Jesus. “Therefore, since we have now been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” Romans 5:9.

Are you of Jesus’ Bloodline, friend? Have you invited the One who died to give you New Life into your heart? Jesus loves you and is waiting for just such an invitation. Won’t you invite Him into your life as Lord and Savior today?
